In this paper, we develop a model to characterize the performance of multihop radio networks in the presence of energy constraints and design routing algorithms to optimally utilize the available energy. The energy model allows us to consider different types of energy sources in heterogeneous environments. The proposed algorithm is shown to achieve a competitive ratio (i.e., the ratio of the performance of any offline algorithm that has knowledge of all past and future packet arrivals to the performance of our online algorithm) that is asymptotically optimal with respect to the number of nodes in the network. The algorithm assumes no statistical information on packet arrivals and can easily be incorporated into existing routing schemes (e.g., proactive or on-demand methodologies) in a distributed fashion. Simulation results confirm that the algorithm performs very well in terms of maximizing the throughput of an energy-constrained network. Further, a new threshold-based scheme is proposed to reduce the routing overhead while incurring only minimum performance degradation.

Parker's model is one of the most discussed mechanisms for coronal heating and has generated much debate. We have recently obtained new scaling results in a two-dimensional (2D) version of this problem suggesting that the heating rate becomes independent of resistivity in a statistical steady state [Ng and Bhattacharjee, Astrophys. J., 675, 899 (2008)]. Our numerical work has now been extended to 3D by means of large-scale numerical simulations. Random photospheric footpoint motion is applied for a time much longer than the correlation time of the motion to obtain converged average coronal heating rates. Simulations are done for different values of the Lundquist number to determine scaling. In the high-Lundquist number limit, the coronal heating rate obtained so far is consistent with a trend that is independent of the Lundquist number, as predicted by previous analysis as well as 2D simulations. In the same limit the average magnetic energy built up by the random footpoint motion tends to have a much weaker dependence on the Lundquist number than that in the 2D simulations, due to the formation of strong current layers and subsequent disruption when the equilibrium becomes unstable. We will present scaling analysis showing that when the dissipation time is comparable or larger than the correlation time of the random footpoint motion, the heating rate tends to become independent of Lundquist number, and that the magnetic energy production is also reduced significantly.

The zero-age main-sequence star AB Dor and the K dwarf component of the V471 Tau close binary have essentially identical rotation rates and spectral types. An analysis of their high-resolution Chandra X-ray spectra reveals remarkably similar coronal characteristics in terms of both temperature structure and element abundances. Both stars show depletions of low first ionization potential (FIP) elements by factors of $3, with higher FIP elements showing more mild depletions. No evidence for enhancements of very low FIP (<7 eV) elements, such as Na, Al, and Ca, as compared to other low-FIP elements, was found. The abundance anomaly pattern for AB Dor and V471 Tau is similar to, although less extreme than, the abundance anomalies exhibited by active RS CVn-type binaries. While we find statistically significant structure in the underlying differential emission measure distributions of these stars over narrow temperature intervals, this structure is strongly dependent on the lines used in the analysis and is probably spurious. On the basis of their X-ray similarities, we conclude that the exact evolutionary state of a star has little effect on coronal characteristics and that the parameters that dominate coronal structure and composition are simply the rotation rate and spectral type.

[1] This study demonstrates the added benefits of assimilating the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) radiances in the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting (HWRF) system to forecasts of four Atlantic hurricane cases that made landfall in 2012. In the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation data assimilation system, the HWRF model top is raised to~0.5 hPa and the cold start embedded in the HWRF system is changed to a warm start. The ATMS data quality control (QC) procedure is examined and illustrated for its effectiveness in removing cloudy radiances of all the 22 ATMS channels using primarily the information from ATMS channels 1 and 2. For each hurricane case, two pairs of data assimilation and forecasting experiments are carried out and compared with and without including ATMS data. The only difference between the two pairs of experiments is that the second pair also includes data from several other polar-orbiting satellite instruments. It is shown that ATMS data assimilation in HWRF results in a consistent positive impact on the track and intensity forecasts of the four landfall hurricanes.
