Nous avons ~ d6plorer la mort de notre Coll~gue Mme Marie-Louise DUBRE1L-JACOTIN, survenue en octobre 1972. Mine DUBREIL-JACOTIN 6tait Professeur ~ l'Uni-versit6 de Paris VI et membre de rEditorial Board du Forum Semigroup. C'est un p6nible devoir pour moi, en m~me temps qu'un hommage '~ sa m6moire, et un t6moignage d'amiti6 pour son 6poux Paul DUBREIL, que d'6crire darts cette revue une courte notice consacr6e sa vie et h ses travaux. N6e ~ Paris en 1905, Mme DUBREIL-JACOTIN a 6t6 l'une des premi6res femmes ma-th6maticiennes franqaises "~ acc6der aux concours et aux titres qui sont en g6n6ral r6serv6s aux hommes : I'Ecole Normale Sup6rieure en 1926 (la m~me promotion que J. LERAY et C. CHEVALLEY), l'Agr6gation "masculine" en 1929, le Doctorat/l Paris en 1934. Apr6s sa th6se, elle a 6t6 charg6e de Recherches jusqu'en 1938, puis charg6e de Cours ~ la Facult6 des Sciences de Rennes en 1938, Maitre de Conf6rences ~t Lyon en 1939, puis Professeur titulaire la Facult6 des Sciences de Poitiers de 1943 ~, 1955 dans la Chaire de Calcul Diff6rentiel et Int6gral. C'est ~ Poitiers que je l'ai connue; je peux t6moigner qu'elle a 6t6 ~ rorigine du d6veloppement du D~partement de Math6matiques de cette Facult6, o~ elle a rempli pleinemerit son r61e de Professeur et de Chercheur, mais oil elle a aussi pr6par6 ravenir en groupant autour d'elle un noyau initial qui comprenait ARBAULT, CROISOT et moi, et qui s'est enrichi par la suite de plusieurs autres au nombre desquels il faut compter pour la th6orie des demi-groupes M. P. SCHUTZENBERGER. Mme DUBREIL-JACOTIN a 6t6 nom-m6e "~ Paris en 1955; en plus de ses nombreuses t~ches, elle 6tait co-directeur du S6minaire d'Alg~bre et Th6orie des Nombres, et animatrice d'un groupe d'6tudes actif sur les structures alg6briques ordonn6es. Son enseignement, r6organis6 suivant les nouvelles r6formes en cours, la mettait en rapport avec les Math6matiques appliqu6es et la MaRrise d'Informatique.Ainsi, jusqu"~ la fin de sa carri~re, Mme DUBREIL-JACOT1N a gard6 un certain goflt pour les domaines les plus vari6s. IIne faut pas oublier que ses premiers travaux portent sur la M6canique des Fluides, sous la direction de H. VILLAT (lui aussi d6c6d6 cette ann6e). Grfice ~ des m6thodes nouvelles, elle a pu trouver la solution exacte de certains probl~mes de mouvements rotationnels, ou d'6tude des ondes dans les liquides homog6nes ou m~me h6t6ro-g~nes. Elle a 6galement abord6 dans la th6orie de la turbulence les transformations de Reynolds, pour en d6gager les axiomes alg6briques essentiels, dans des travaux en liaison avee ceux de J. KAMPE de FERIET, G. BIRKHOFF, ... (Propri6t6s alg6briques des transformations de Reynolds, C. R. Acad. Sciences Paris, t. 236, 1952 et 1953, p. 1136-38 et 1950-51. Colloque d'Alg~bre Sup6rieure, C. B. R. M., Bruxelles, 1956. La th6orie des treillis distributifs, des relations d'6quivalence, et les m6thodes de l'Alg6bre y jouent un r61e, et l'orientation des travaux de Mine DUBREIL-JACOTIN s'en trouve influene6e.
