A carbonaceous material (Black Pearls 2000) was used for measurements of heat of immersion in water, formamide, n-dodecane, benzene, bromoform, and diiodomethane. Using the values obtained and the adsorption data from the literature, the Lifshitz-van der Waals component and the electron-acceptor and electron-donor parameters of the acid-base component of the surface free energy of the carbon black have been determined. The surface free energy of carbon black was found to result mainly from Lifshitz-van der Waals intermolecular interactions; however, it can interact with an adherent medium also by acidbase forces. The electron-acceptor parameter of the carbon black surface free energy is higher than zero, but the electron-donor parameter is close to zero. It was also found that the surface free energy of carbon black has a high value close to that for graphite.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
