We determined the structure and physicochemical properties of poly(2,5-furylenevinylene), poly(2,5-thienylenevinylene) and poly(2,5-furylene-co-2,5-thienylenevinylene) that were synthesized via aldol polycondensation. Two kinds of polymer were obtained, one with mainly aldol and one with mainly vinylene structure units. The former are soluble in water, and the latter insoluble in water and only slightly soluble in organic solvents. The aldol polymers can be transformed to vinylene polymers by thermal dehydration. The d.c. conductivities at room temperature are of the order of lo-'' and lo-' S/cm for the aldol and vinylene forms, respectively.
Poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) was prepared by polymerization of benzene and was exactly purified from oligomers and the catalyst. IR spectra of the resulting material indicated only para substitution and a DP about 20. PPP is a polycrystalline substance with a small degree of crystallinity and is thermally resistant up to 798 K. The annealing of pristine polymer produced a material with higher crystallinity and crystallite size. In our investigations we examined the electrical properties of doped (AlC1,) and undoped PPP at different temperatures. The mechanism of conductivity is explained assuming the existence of the Schottky barriers between polycrystalline grains and intergrain regions. The WAXS and ESR data are compared with the electrical results.
0 1985 Hiithig& Wepf Verlag, Base1
Electrical and paramagnetic properties of poly(pheny1ene sulphide) synthesized by a direct method from benzene and sulphur were investigated. In darkness dc conductivity of the polymer in its pristine state is of the order S/m. Upon doping with iodine it increases by 8 orders of magnitude. For undoped samples the n-type conductivity and for those doped with iodine the p-type conductivity was observed. On the basis of ESR experiments the number of spins and g-value were determined, which for undoped polymer at room temperature are equal to 0.80 * 10" spins/g and 2.0037, respectively. Next, the changes in spin concentration both for the iodine doped samples and these annealed within the temperature range 5 13 -903 K were described. An attempt to discuss the ESR lineshape in a quantitative way was also made.
