Einleitung ! Frühgeborene werden im späteren Kindesalter häufig aufgrund von Wahrnehmungs-und Entwicklungsstçrungen ergotherapeutisch behandelt. Daraus entstand das Interesse, Mçglichkeiten der frühzeitigen ergotherapeutischen Fçrderung von Frühgeborenen in der Neonatologie zu erforschen. Dieses Thema behandelte eine im Juni 2006 vorgelegte Bachelor-Arbeit des Fachbereichs Ergotherapie der niederländischen Hogeschool Zuyd in Heerlen. In Deutschland kommen jährlich 6 -7 % aller Neugeborenen zu früh auf die Welt. Von 1984 bis 2004 stieg die Anzahl der Frühgeborenen mit einem Geburtsgewicht unter 2.500 g von 6 % auf 9 % und unter 1.500 g von 0,7 % auf 1,4 % [22]. Dagegen sank die Mortalität früh geborener Zusammenfassung ! Einleitung: In der Neonatologie wird zunehmend die Qualität des Überlebens und die entwicklungsfçrdernde Betreuung von Frühgeborenen thematisiert. Die diesem Artikel zugrunde liegende Bachelor-Arbeit untersuchte die Mçglichkeiten der ergotherapeutischen Fçrderung von Frühgebore-nen in der Neonatologie in Deutschland. Methode: Mithilfe von Experteninterviews wurden 5 in der Neonatologie arbeitende Ergotherapeuten befragt. Die Auswertung erfolgte anhand einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse. Ergebnisse: Die Darstellung der Ergebnisse gliedert sich in die erforderlichen Kompetenzen (Fähigkeiten, Aufgaben, Kenntnisse/Ressourcen, Herausforderungen), den ergotherapeutischen Prozess (Befundung, Zielfindung, Behandlung) und die beeinflussenden Faktoren bzw. die institutionellen Handlungsbedingungen der ergotherapeutischen Arbeit in der Neonatologie auf. Schlussfolgerungen: Die speziellen Bedürfnisse der Frühgeborenen und ihrer Umwelt erfordern eine optimal abgestimmte Therapie und den Einsatz verschiedener Behandlungsmethoden. Für das vielseitige Aufgabenfeld, das unter anderem die Wahrnehmungs-und Entwicklungsfçrderung oder die Anleitung von Eltern und Pflegepersonal beinhaltet, werden zahlreiche Kompetenzen des Ergotherapeuten bençtigt. Daraus ergibt sich eine spannende Herausforderung für die Ergotherapie.
