einer experimentellen Priifung unterworfen worden ist, hat es sich gezeigt, dass dieses von B e r z e l i u s und spater r o i l v. H a u e r dem Tellur heigelegte Atomgewicht vollkommen genau ist. Tellur liast sich also eben so wenig, wie Beryllium, in das System einpassen. Und in der That bleibt es nicht nur dabei steben. Die Entdeckuog eines Boroxychlorids2) BoOCI, ( C o u n c l e r ) zeigt an, dam Bor aiich fiinfwerthig auftreten kann, aber unter die finfwerthigen Elemente kann es keinesweges eingereiht werden. Und wenn einmal die Chemie der seltenen Erdmetalle durchforscht wird, wohin kommen dann alle die Grundstoffe, deren Zahl schon heute eine so unerwartete Hohe erreicht hat und ohne Zweifel noch griisser werden wird? Bei Betracbtung sammtlicher dahiu gehiirenden Elemente, deren Atomgewichte noch nicht sicher festgestellt sind, bemerken wir, dass die Schwierigkeiten schon jetzt gross, ja untiberwindlich sind, wenn es gilt eine Stelle f i r Erbium und Ytterbium mit ihren genau fixirten Atonigewichten E r = 1GG und Yb = 173 zu finden, welche ihre Verwandtschaften mit anderen ihnen nahestehenden Grundstoffen ausdriicken kiinnte. Nach alledem diirfte man sagen, dass das periodische Gesetz i n seinem jetzigen Ziistande kaum als ein adaquater Ausdruck iinsercr gegenwartigen Kenntnis der Elemente angesehen werden kann. Doch, d s dasselbe z. B. darch die veranderten Formeln der seltenen Erden R,O, statt R O und durch die Entdeckung der vorausgesagteri Metalle Ekanluminiurn und Ekabor in Gallium und Scandium die augenscheinlichsten Beweise liefert, dass die Wahrheit in vieler Hinsicht getroffen ist, so darf man hoffen, dass diese Theorie so modificirt und entwickelt wird, dass sie jede durchs Experiment festgestellte Thatsache in sich aufnehmen ond erklaren kann.
