Background: Transplantation is a complex treatment which requires continuous and permanent lifestyle adaptations. Adolescent changes can affect adherence to treatment influencing its long term outcome. Aim: To assess the impact of liver transplantation in the quality of life of adolescents' patients and adherence to post transplant treatment. Patients and methods: In November 2010, 17 patients were subject to a closed quality of life questionnaire of 23 questions. Adolescence was defined according to WHO, as the period of life between 10 and 19 years. Quality of life was evaluated with a scale from 1 to 10, being 10 the best possible quality of life. Mean age of the patients was 15 years, 40% were women. Answers are described in the table. Low level of education 35% Continue with the same school and friends 65% Difficulties in making friends 23% Attend alone to consultation 17% Modify living habits 40% Feel overprotected 76% Episode of graft rejection 58% Difficulties with the medical team / Difficulties with medications 41%/53% Rated their quality of life > 7 58% Difficulties in carrying out the timetable of medication 41% [Table 1] Conclusions: 1) More than half of the studied population manifested a good quality of life, maintaining the same school and friends that had in pre transplant life 2) Difficulties in taking medication were evidenced, requiring the inclusion of other stakeholders, such as school, to improve adherence to treatment. Introduction: Brunei Darussalam does not have an in-house transplant program. All patients with renal transplants were transplanted abroad. The country has 560 patients on renal replacement therapy (81.2% Haemodialysis, 12.3% Peritoneal Dialysis and 6.5% transplantation) (1)and a dialysis prevalence of 1300 per million population (2).A recent population survey revealed that 81% of respondents are willing to donate their kidneys if there is a local transplant program (2). There are no published data regarding the quality of life of renal replacement therapy patients of Brunei Darussalam. As part of the initiative to set up a local program, we decided to assess the quality of life of our existing transplant patients against those on dialysis and it is hoped that the results of this study can lend weight towards the initiation of a local transplant program. Methods: The sample population consisted of renal transplant, peritonealdialysis and haemodialysis patients from three hospitalsin Brunei Darussalam. The World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire in both English and Malay versions were used(3). Results: The response rate was 96% (n= 124 out of 129) with mean age of 49.7 years. The total number of transplant, heamodialysis and peritoneal dialysis was 23.4 %(n=29),48.4% (n=60),&28.2% (n=35) respectively. There were 53.2% males (n=66), 75% were Malays (n=93), 80.6% (n=100) married and 36.3 %( n= 45) employed patients. The mean physical health, psychological, social relationship and environment scores of the three types of Renal Replacement Therapy are ...
The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of banking the jargon as an intervention to enhance conceptual understanding of Grade 9 Science-Earth and Space in the learners’ academic performance. The study used a quasi-experimental design with an equal number of participants in the experimental and control groups. There were 32 participants from each of the two groups, who were all Grade 9 learners with a diversity of learning styles. Students in the control group received instruction without the intervention, while students in the experimental group underwent this intervention. The data obtained from both groups were analyzed using paired samples t-test and one-way ANOVA. The use of paired samples t-test revealed that both methods significantly increased the mastery of the students in Grade 9 Science-Earth and Space. The use of ANOVA in the post-test results showed a significant difference between the groups in favor of the experimental group. The learners in the experimental group performed better than the learners in the control group in understanding the concepts taught in the three modules of Grade 9 Science-Earth and Space. This implies that the intervention was effective. This result was validated by the results of the interview of ten (n=10) participants. Their responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that students have varied experiences in accomplishing and learning from the material. Further, all ten participants agreed that the intervention had helped them by widening their vocabulary which led to an easier understanding of the concepts taught.
