Die Entdeckung des Sauerstoffs im 18. Jahrhundert als der Beginn der chemischen Revolution ist ohne Zweifel eine wissenschaftliche Leistung, welche den Nobelpreis verdient hat. Es gibt dabei nur zwei kleine Probleme: Erstens wurde der erste Nobelpreis für Chemie -wie die anderen auch -erstmals im 20. Jahrhundert, um genau zu sein im Jahr 1901, vergeben. Und zweitens, wenn es den Nobelpreis bereits gegeben hätte, wer hätte ihn dann erhalten sollen, d. h. wer hat eigentlich den Sauerstoff entdeckt?War es Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786), Apotheker im damals schwedischen Stralsund in Pommern? Er gewann das Gas zum ersten Mal im Jahr 1771 und gab ihm den Namen "Feuerluft", machte jedoch zunächst der wissenschaftlichen Welt keine schriftliche Mitteilung darüber [9]. Erst am 30. September 1774 schrieb er einen Brief an Antoine Laurent Lavoisier in Paris, den berühmtesten Chemiker seiner Zeit, und berichtete ihm von seiner Entdeckung. Der Brief kam nie bei Lavoisier an. Erst mehr als 100 Jahre später, 1890, wurde er gefunden, versteckt in Lavoisiers wissenschaftlichem Nachlass. Eine Intrige? Wurde der Brief vielleicht durch die 16 Jahre junge Marie Anne Pierrette Paulze Lavoisier unterschlagen? Das Mädchen war Lavoisiers Ehefrau, seine Assistentin im Labor und seine Sekretärin.
