We present the FP420 R&D project, which has been studying the key aspects of the development and installation of a silicon tracker and fast-timing detectors in the LHC tunnel at 420 m from the interaction points of the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These detectors would measure precisely very forward protons in conjunction with the corresponding central detectors as a means to study Standard Model (SM) physics, and to search for and characterise new physics signals. This report includes a detailed description of the physics case for the detector and, in particular, for the measurement of Central Exclusive Production, pp→p+ϕ+p, in which the outgoing protons remain intact and the central system ϕ may be a single particle such as a SM or MSSM Higgs boson. Other physics topics discussed are γγ and γp interactions, and diffractive processes. The report includes a detailed study of the trigger strategy, acceptance, reconstruction efficiencies, and expected yields for a particular pp→pHp measurement with Higgs boson decay in the bb̄ mode. The document also describes the detector acceptance as given by the LHC beam optics between the interaction points and the FP420 location, the machine backgrounds, the new proposed connection cryostat and the moving (``Hamburg'') beam-pipe at 420 m, and the radio-frequency impact of the design on the LHC. The last part of the document is devoted to a description of the 3D silicon sensors and associated tracking performances, the design of two fast-timing detectors capable of accurate vertex reconstruction for background rejection at high-luminosities, and the detector alignment and calibration strategy.

The Energetic Particle Telescope (EPT) is a new compact and modular ionizing particle spectrometer that was launched on 7 May 2013 to a LEO polar orbit at an altitude of 820 km onboard the ESA satellite PROBA-V. First results show electron, proton and helium ion fluxes in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and at high latitudes, with high flux increases during SEP (Solar Energetic Particles) events and geomagnetic storms. These observations help to improve the understanding of generation and loss processes associated to the Van Allen radiation belts.

A new apparatus for detection of ! oscillation has been successfully constructed and operated by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. The design, implementation and performance of the electronic trigger system is described. A trigger eciency of 99% was measured for charged current events and 90% for neutral current events.

This paper is concerned with the development of imaging methods to localize sources or reflectors in inhomogeneous moving media with acoustic waves that have travelled through them. A typical example is the localization of broadband acoustic sources in a turbulent jet flow for aeroacoustic applications. The proposed algorithms are extensions of Kirchhoff migration (KM) and coherent interferometry (CINT) which have been considered for smooth and randomly inhomogeneous quiescent media so far. They are constructed starting from the linearized Euler equations for the acoustic perturbations about a stationary ambient flow. A model problem for the propagation of acoustic waves generated by a fixed point source in an ambient flow with constant velocity is addressed. Based on this result imaging functions are proposed to modify the existing KM and CINT functions to account for the ambient flow velocity. They are subsequently tested and compared by numerical simulations in various configurations, including a synthetic turbulent jet representative of the main features encountered in actual jet flows.
