Purpose The disposal of solid waste is a serious environmental problem for humanity. Vermicomposting is used as one of the methods for recycling of organic waste, resulting in a humified material of great agronomic potential which promotes carbon sequestration when applied to the soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical characteristics of vermicomposts from cattle manure (CM), orange peel (OP) and filter cake (FC). Methods Three compost piles were set up, 2:1 OP ? CM, 3:1 FC ? CM and CM. The piles were initially composted for 60 days. Thereafter, earthworms were added to the piles to initiate the vermicomposting process. Results The pH and the organic carbon contents were above the minimum recommended values for organic fertilizers. The N content was below the minimum value but the C/N ratio was in the required range. The C/N values where lower in OP ? CM and FC ? CM than in CM. Further, the N contents of treatments were different with OP ? CM having the highest value. The C/N ratios of the piles were 9.52, 9.62 and 11.03 for OP ? CM, FC ? CM and CM, respectively, and were lower than the maximum recommended value by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (Ministry of Agriculture 2009). Conclusion Thus, co-vermicomposting of filter cake and orange peel with cattle manure has the potential for application sustainable agriculture.
Purpose In this study, vermicomposted tannery wastes were applied in the organic cultivation of sweet pepper in a greenhouse. The effects of this organic matter addition on plant development and on the distributions of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in plant tissues and organs were assessed. Methods In a greenhouse, organic sweet peppers were cultivated adding vermicomposted tannery to the substrate (sample VRC) and the results were compared with the samples control (dYL; only soil) and reference (NPK; adding mineral fertilizer). The growth, nutritive value and fruit production were assessed to evaluate the plant development in different types of substrate. Besides evaluating the biostimulant effect of vermicomposts, the distributions of Cr in plant tissues were also studied. Results Up to three harvested sweet peppers were obtained per plant, compared with only one fruit for the reference treatment with NPK addition. Based on the Cr dynamics in the plants, the highest concentration was found in the fruits, varied as follows: fruits > stem and stalks > leaves = root; however, the Cr concentration in the fruits was statistically the same across all treatments. Additionally, only Cr(III) was detected and quantified in the fruits. Conclusion The addition of vermicompost was biostimulating to plants and positively influenced their development. Based on the Cr dynamics in the plants, since the Cr concentration was the same across all treatments, it demonstrated that the addition of tannery residues to the vermicompost did not negatively influence the health benefits or food security of the produced fruits.

The efficiency of the addition of vermicompost in relation to the decontamination of red latosol was evaluated against acute toxicity, biomass gain and reproduction of Eisenia foetida (earthworms) incubated in the contaminated soil. The soil was spiked to different concentrations of glyphosate from 96 mg kg -1 (recommended by the manufacturer) to 10000 mg kg -1 to simulate contamination by shedding of the herbicide. To evaluate the effect of vermicompost in the soil contaminated with 10000 mg kg -1 glyphosate, 15 g of vermicompost, totaling 3%, was added to the soil. The incorporation of vermicompost to the soil inhibited earthworm mortality. However, even the dose of 96 mg kg -1 presented deleterious effects on the reproduction of E. foetida. It can be concluded that the addition of vermicompost to soil contaminated with glyphosate attenuates the deleterious action of the herbicide on E. foetida.
Abstract:The use of vermicompost for remediating soil contaminated with the commercial formulation containing deltamethrin was proposed. Biotoxicity tests with the goal of evaluating the potential remediation degree of the vermicompost after its addition to contaminated soils were performed. The tests lasted 56 days and involved Eisenia foetida earthworms. Possible structural changes in humic acids from these soils were evaluated by means of FTIR spectroscopy. The soil contaminated with deltamethrin offers toxicity to the earthworms. However, the vermicompost addition caused great positive impact on soil contamination level, which became quite similar to the reference soil. The vermicompost remedial effect depends on the source material. In this study the vermicompost were from filter cake and orange peel. The results obtained by FTIR pointed out for a weak interaction such as van der Waals type between the pyretroid and humic acids.
