K, Niskanen L. Psychiatric morbidity among emergency room patients. Nord Psykiatr Tidsskr 1991;45:463-466. Oslo. ISSN 0029-1455. Attempts to assess psychiatric morbidity in the medical setting have increased, but patients usually remain at the "reason for visit" level of diagnosis. We studied 218 emergency room patients (109 men, 109 women) treated at Kuopio University Hospital. Psychiatric disturbance was evaluated with a questionnaire (GHQ-36) completed by the patients themselves. Forty-eight per cent of the men (mean, 60 years) and 55% of the women (mean, 48 years) scored over 5 out of 36 in General Health Questionnaire and thus could be classified as probable psychiatric cases. No correlation between age and total score was found. The casesness percentage was highest in patients attending gynecology (63%) and general medicine (59%). Our results have important health implications and highlight the need for more than occasional consultation efforts. 0 Emergency department, General hospiral, Psychiatric morbidity.
