Background: Given the increasing availability of internet, it has become a common source of health information for all population including students. However, the actual effect of this increased access to information on the health status and its different aspects needs to be studied more. This study aimed to investigate the correlations between online health information seeking behavior and health related quality of life in a sample of high school students of Iran. Methods: A survey was conducted among secondary school girl students of Yazd province, Iran in 2019. A total of 295 students participated in the study. The required data were gathered using two valid questionnaires including eHIQ (Kelly et al., 2015) to measure the online health information seeking experience and validated Persian version of SF-36 to measure the health related quality of life. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient using SPSS version 23. Results: The mean score of eHIQ was 2.71±0.71. Mean scores for physical component summary and mental component summary of SF-36 were 72.90±16.20 and 63.19±22.26, respectively. eHIQ score showed no statistical correlations with physical component summary (P=.46) and mental component summary (P=.53). Conclusion: The findings suggest that seeking online health information does not improve the health related quality of life. The possible causes are discussed but this finding should be studied more. Background. Documented trends in health-related risk behaviors among US adolescents have remained high over time. Studies indicate relationships among mutual friends are a major influence on adolescents’ risky behaviors. Social Network Analysis (SNA) can help understand friendship ties affecting individual adolescents’ engagement in these behaviors. Moreover, a systematic literature review can synthesize findings from a range of studies using SNA, as well as assess these studies’ methodological quality. Review findings also can help health educators and promoters develop more effective programs.Objective. This review systematically examined studies of the influence of friendship networks on adolescents’ risk behaviors, which utilized SNA and the Add Health data (a nationally representative sample).Methods. We employed the Matrix Method to synthesize and evaluate 15 published studies that met our inclusion and exclusion criteria, retrieved from the Add Health website and 3 major databases (Medline, Eric, and PsycINFO). Moreover, we assigned each study a methodological quality score (MQS).Results. In all studies, friendship networks among adolescents promoted their risky behaviors, including drinking alcohol, smoking, sexual intercourse, and marijuana use. The average MQS was 4.6, an indicator of methodological rigor (scale: 1–9).Conclusion. Better understanding of risky behaviors influenced by friends can be useful for health educators and promoters, as programs targeting friendships might be more effective. Additionally, the overall MQ of these reviewed studies was good, as average scores fell above the scale’s mid-point.
Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) has been demanded for the assessment of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) in clinical and epidemiological settings. This study aimed to validate BIA equations for predicting ASM in the standing and supine positions; externally to cross-validate the new and published and built-in BIA equations for group and individual predictive accuracy; and to assess the overall agreement between the measured and predicted ASM index as sarcopenia diagnosis. In total, 199 healthy older adults completed the measurements of multifrequency BIA (InBody770 and InBodyS10) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Multiple regression analysis was used to validate the new multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MF-BIA) prediction equations. Each MF-BIA equation in the standing and supine position developed in the entire group included height2/resistance, sex, and reactance as predictors (R2 = 92.7% and 92.8%, SEE = 1.02 kg and 1.01 kg ASM for the standing and supine MF-BIA). The new MF-BIA equations had a specificity positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 85% or more except for a sensitivity of about 60.0%. The new standing and supine MF-BIA prediction equation are useful for epidemiological and field settings as well as a clinical diagnosis of sarcopenia. Future research is needed to improve the sensitivity of diagnosis of sarcopenia using MF-BIA.
