Inwieweit eine Begrenzung dieser Zeit durch die genannten inneren Regulatoren in Frage kommen kann, vermogen wir ni&t anzugeben, da wir noch vie1 zu wenig uber ihre Wirksamkeit wisen. Vom Standpunkte der Geochemie konnen wir aber eine Antwort geben. Wie oben dargelegt wurde, ist die Existenz des organixhen Lebens von aul3en her durch zwei Faktoren bedingt: Durch die Strahlung der Some und durch die Anwesenheit freier Kohlensaure im Wasser uad in der Luft. Was die Konstanz der Sonnenstrahlung betrift, so haben wir bisher keinen Anhalt dafiir, da13 die Intensitat dieser Strahlung innerhalb geologischer Zeiten gro13ere Schwankungen erfahren hatte. Es sieht eher so aus, als ob die Some seit dem Beginn des Lebens auf der Erde mit immer gleicher Starke gestrahlt hat. Daher haben wir auch keinen Grund zu einer Annahme, daQ die Sonnenstrahlung sich in Zukunft verandern wird. Anders liegt aber der Fall bei der freien Rohlensaure. Da die Organismen im Laufe ihrer Einleitung. Bntwicklungin lo8 Jahrendrei Viertel des in der Erdrinde vorhandenen Rohlenstoffs als Kalkstein und Kohle festgelegt haben und da von diesem Kohlenstoff nur ein kleiner Teil in den Kreislauf zuruckkehren kann, stelit in der Erdrinde maximal nur noch ein Viertel ihres gezamten Kohlenstoffs fur die Bildung juveniler Kohlensaure zur Verfiigung, d. h. die Erde stehtgeochemisch gesehenim letzten Viertel ihrer Vegetationsperiode und die Organismen habenbei gleicher Kreislaufgeschwindigkeit des Kohlenstoffs wie bishernoch etwa 200 bis 300 Millionen Jahre vor sich. Ob die lebendige Substanz in der Lage sein wird, diese Klippe zu iiberwinden, indem sie einen Angriff auf die von ihr selbst geschaffenen Vorrate an Kalkstein und Rohle unternimmt, vermijgen wir natiirlich nicht zu sagen. Bei derziihigkeit, die die Organismen wiihrend ihres loo Jahre langen Daseinskampfes bewiesen haben, und bei der Bedeutung, die sich der ziemlich seltene Kohlenstoff gegeniiber andern haufigen Elementen in der Geochemie zu verschaffen d t e , darf man der lebendigen Substanz dieses chemische Meisterstuck vielleicht zutrauen.
