The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) is an exotic quantum phenomenon originating from dissipation-less chiral channels at the sample edge. While the QAHE has been observed in magnetically doped topological insulators (TIs), exploiting magnetic proximity effect on the TI surface from adjacent ferromagnet layers may provide an alternative approach to the QAHE by opening an exchange gap with less disorder than that in the doped system. Nevertheless, the engineering of a favorable heterointerface that realizes the QAHE based on the magnetic proximity effect remains to be achieved. Here, we report on the observation of the QAHE in a proximity coupled system of nonmagnetic TI and ferromagnetic insulator (FMI). We have designed sandwich heterostructures of (Zn,Cr)Te/(Bi,Sb)2Te3/(Zn,Cr)Te that fulfills two prerequisites for the emergence of the QAHE; the formation of a sizable exchange gap at the TI surface state and the tuning of the Fermi energy into the exchange gap. The efficient proximity coupling in the all-telluride based heterostructure as demonstrated here will enable a realistic design of versatile tailor-made topological materials coupled with ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, superconductivity, and so on.
The scanning near-field optical microscopy imaging of specimens in liquid and of cultured cells in aqueous solutions is reported. A scanning near-field optical/atomic-force microscope (SNOM-AFM) was developed, in which the scanning of an optical-fiber probe cantilever over the specimen was controlled by noncontact mode AFM (dynamic mode AFM). This imaging mode reduces damage to the probe and soft specimens. The resonant frequency of the probe cantilever decreased 20% to ≊14 kHz and the Q factor decreased by a factor of 8 to ≊30 in water, compared with these values in air, which was sufficient to perform SNOM-AFM imaging in liquid.
1. The metabolism of selegiline (SG) has been studied by investigating the time-course of urinary excretion of SG and its metabolites using high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-ESI MS) in combination with solid-phase extraction. 2. The excretion profiles of SG and its four major metabolites, selegiline-N-oxide (SGO), N-desmethylselegiline (DM-SG), methamphetamine (MA) and amphetamine (AP), were investigated in six healthy volunteers after oral administrations of SG hydrochloride in a single dose of 2.5 or 7.5mg, and a repeat twice-daily dose of 5.0 mg day(-1) (for 3 days). 3. The cumulative amount of SGO excreted within approximately the first 8-12h was comparable with MA, and the amount in the first 72 h was 2.0-7.8 times larger (2.8-13.2% of the dose) than that of DM-SG. 4. These results demonstrate that SGO can be used in place of DM-SG, which is known to be a main specific metabolite of SG, as a new indicator for the discrimination of SG use compared with MA abuse.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
