Although, post annealing is an efficient way to annihilate/restructure deficiencies in self-assembly (SA) ZnO nanorods (ZNRs), the detailed investigation about the surface properties of annealed SA-ZNRs is a long standing issue and the major discrepancy is mainly due to single step annealing. We demonstrate the strategic two step annealing process to create reliable structural configuration in SA-ZNRs during the first round of annealing at 800 °C in vacuum (VA process), and create intrinsic defects in the second step of annealing in oxygen rich atmosphere (OA process) to correlate the formation of the defects related to green/orange-red emission. SA-ZNRs annealed in VA-OA processes reveal positive correlations between the oxygen flow rate and formation of oxygen interstitials (Oi) and zinc vacancies (VZn). The OA-VA processes exhibit the relation of residual Oi and additional Vo. According to VA-OA and OA-VA processes, we propose that the green emission in ZnO annealed in oxygen poor/rich condition is mainly due to the formation of Vo/VZn and annealing at oxygen rich condition creates Oi that lead to strong orange-red emission. Rather than O1s, we propose a reliable method by considering the peak shift of Zn2p in XPS to inspect the ZnO matrix, which has good interdependence with the characteristics of PL.
This study investigated the contribution of flexor muscles to the forearm through fatigue; therefore, the differences in forearm mechanisms on the pitching motion in fastball were analysed. Fifteen baseball pitchers were included in this study. Ultrasonographical examination of participants' ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel with the elbow extended and at 45°, 90° and 120° of flexion was carried. A three-dimensional motion analysis system with 14 reflective markers attached on participants was used for motion data collection. The electromyography system was applied over the flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis and extensor carpi radialis muscles of the dominant arm. Flexor carpi ulnaris muscle activity showed a significant difference during the acceleration phase, with a peak value during fastball post-fatigue (P = 0.02). Significant differences in the distance between ulnar nerve and medial condyle on throwing arm and non-throwing arm were observed as the distance increased with the elbow movement from 0° to 120° of flexion (P = 0.01). The significant increase of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle activity might be responsible for maintaining the stability of the wrist joint. The increased diameter might compress the ulnar nerve and cause several pathological changes. Therefore, fatigue in baseball pitchers still poses a threat to the ulnar nerve because the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor carpi radialis all originate from the medial side of the elbow, and the swelling tendons after fatigue might be a key point.
The fluid dynamic behavior within a pixel of an electrowetting display (EWD) is thoroughly investigated through a 3D simulation. By coupling the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) force deduced from the Maxwell stress tensor with the laminar phase field of the oil–water dual phase, the complete switch processes of an EWD, including the break-up and the electrowetting stages in the switch-on process (with voltage) and the oil spreading in the switch-off process (without voltage), are successfully simulated. By considering the factor of the change in the apparent contact angle at the contact line, the electro–optic performance obtained from the simulation is found to agree well with its corresponding experiment. The proposed model is used to parametrically predict the effect of interfacial (e.g. contact angle of grid) and geometric (e.g. oil thickness and pixel size) properties on the defects of an EWD, such as oil dewetting patterns, oil overflow, and oil non-recovery. With the help of the defect analysis, a highly stable EWD is both experimentally realized and numerically analyzed.
We have presented a bistable transflective cholesteric light shutter. The shutter contains dual-frequency cholesteric liquid crystals that incorporate a photocurable monomer. The electro-optical properties and optical microscope images of the shutter were examined. Good correlations between the cholesteric textures and optical properties of the shutters were obtained. The shutter was switched into a wide-band homogeneous transmission mode by a low frequency voltage pulse, and into a selective reflection mode using a high-frequency voltage pulse. The concentration of the monomer apparently affected the electro-optical characteristics of the shutter.
This work investigates a novel color cone lasing emission (CCLE) based on a one-dimensional photonic crystal-like dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (DDCLC) film with a single pitch. The lasing wavelength in the CCLE is distributed continuously at 676.7-595.6 nm, as measured at a continuously increasing oblique angle relative to the helical axis of 0-50 degrees . This work demonstrates that lasing wavelength coincides exactly with the wavelength at the long wavelength edge of the CLC reflection band at oblique angles of 0-50 degrees . Simulation results of dispersion relations at different oblique angles using Berreman's 4X4 matrix method agrees closely with experimental results. Some unique and important features of the CCLE are identified and discussed.
