Application of juvenoids to feeding last instar larvae of Galleria mellonella affects the onset of moult. The effect seems to be due to a direct inhibition of prothoracic glands and to modification of the prothoracicotropic brain activity. This double interference with the function of prothoracic glands allows most insects to escape the lethal morphogenetic action of juvenoids either by extending duration of the last larval instar or by undergoing a supernumerary larval moult. In both cases the larvae continue growing at the same rate as the controls until they reach about 300 mg in the last instar or 450–526 mg in supernumerary instars. Superlarvae exposed to juvenoids continuously cease growing, occasionally undergo stationary ecdysis and eventually perish. When the treatment is discontinued they mostly produce large fertile adults. Juvenoids applied to postfeeding larvae and freshly ecdysed pupae induce development of lethal larval‐pupal and pupal‐adult intermediate forms and are thus effectively killing Galleria.
