The alkaline catalysts commonly applied to alkoxylation are characterized by a limited spectrum of activity caused by an irreversible termination of the polyether chains. The presented results show that double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts reduce or eliminate the aforementioned adverse rearrangement of hydroxyl groups. Moreover, DMC catalysts indicate high activity at low concentrations (ppm range), as expressed by high polymerization rates. It was demonstrated that decreased concentrations of DMC catalyst irreversibly influence its reactivity and the dispersity of the obtained products, as exemplified by the production and determination of selected polyoxypropylenediols at different concentrations of the catalyst. Because of their unique advantages, the DMC catalysts are a very attractive alternative to conventional alkaline catalysts for the polyaddition of oxiranes. The phenomenon was discussed and explained by an alteration of reaction rate coefficients at subsequent polyaddition stages.

Vanadium complexes with tetradentate salen‐type ligands were first time explored in ethylene polymerizations. The effects of the vanadium complex structure, the alkyl aluminum cocatalysts type (EtAlCl2, Et2AlCl, Et3Al, and MAO), and the polymerization conditions (Al/V molar ratio, temperature) on polyethylene yield were explored. It was found that EtAlCl2 in conjunction with investigated vanadium complexes produced the most efficient catalytic systems. It was shown, moreover, that the structural changes of the tetradentate salen ligand (type of bridge which bond donor nitrogen atoms and type of substituent on aryl rings) affected activity of the catalytic system. The complexes containing ligands with cyclohexylene bridges were more active than those with ethylene bridges. Furthermore, the presence of electron‐withdrawing groups at the para position and electron‐donating substituents at the ortho position on the aryl rings of the ligands resulted in improved activity in relation to the systems with no substituents (with the exception of bulky t‐Bu group). The results presented also revealed that all vanadium complexes activated by common organoaluminum compounds gave linear polyethylenes with high melting points (134.8–137.6 °C), high molecular weights, and broad molecular weight distribution. The effect of incorporation of octakis({alkyl} dimethylsiloxy)octasilsesquioxanes molecules with n-octyl, n-octadecyl and 4-methyl-hexyl substituents on thermal properties of polypropylene (PP), low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated. Thermal properties of those composite materials were evaluated by means of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) methods. The type and mass% content of POSS nanofillers influenced the crystallization and melting properties as well as thermal stability of the obtained polyolefin nanocomposites. The incorporated POSS particles-acting as nucleating agents-improved the crystallization process of those polyolefin materials. The POSS nanofiller with n-octyl substituents turned out the most effective nucleating agent. The addition of POSS nanofiller particles into the polyolefin matrix affected the melting behavior of the nanocomposites obtained, decreasing their melting temperatures. Thermal stability under nitrogen as well as in air atmosphere was most significantly enhanced for polyolefin nanocomposites contained the POSS with n-octadecyl substituents. That may result from improved compatibility of the POSS structure with long n-alkyl chain substituents at the silicon-oxygen core. The uniform dispersion of the long n-alkyl chainsubstituted POSS was confirmed by SEM analysis.

Metal salen complexes as ethylene polymerization catalystseffect of catalytic system composition on its activity and properties of polymerization productsSummary -The series of salen-type complexes differing in the metal center (M = Ti, Zr, V) and in the coordination spheres (different substituent at salen ligands) after activation with methylalumoxane (MAO) or Et2AlCl were studied as catalytic systems in ethylene polymerization. The vanadium and titanium complexes were found to be more active in combination with alkylaluminum compound (Et 2 AlCl) then with MAO, while zirconium complex was active only in combination with MAO. The activity of complexes activated by Et2AlCl decreases in the order V > Ti >> Zr ≅ 0, and when MAO is used as the cocatalyst the activity changes the order: Ti > Zr > V. The substituent type in the salen ligand also affects the catalyst activity; the best results were obtained for the catalyst having Cl or Br as substituents. The type of substituent has no significant effect on polyethylene properties, while the type of cocatalyst and the type of metallic centre play here the essential role. The salen titanium complexes in combination with Et2AlCl usually produce low molecular weight polyethylene with narrow polydispersity, also accompanied by oligomers. Other catalytic systems give linear high molecular weight polyethylene (M w = 200 000-700 000).

A novel group of silsesquioxane derivatives, which are siloxane-silsesquioxane resins (S4SQ), was for the first time examined as possible flame retardants in polypropylene (PP) materials. Thermal stability of the PP/S4SQ composites compared to the S4SQ resins and neat PP was estimated using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis under nitrogen and in air atmosphere. The effects of the non-functionalized and n-alkyl-functionalized siloxane-silsesquioxane resins on thermostability and flame retardancy of PP materials were also evaluated by thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) and by cone calorimeter tests. The results revealed that the functionalized S4SQ resins may form a continuous ceramic layer on the material surface during its combustion, which improves both thermal stability and flame retardancy of the PP materials. This beneficial effect was observed especially when small amounts of the S4SQ fillers were applied. The performed analyses allowed us to propose a possible mechanism for the degradation of the siloxane-silsesquioxane resins, as well as to explain their possible role during the combustion of the PP/S4SQ composites.
