Congestive heart failure (CHF) is an increasingly prevalent condition characterized by a reduced ability of the heart to circulate blood throughout the body. Although CHF is particularly prevalent among aging populations, evidence suggests physical training can improve exercise capacity, quality of life, and risk of mortality. Many individuals with CHF lack access to cardiac rehabilitation facilities, though, and therefore do not receive appropriate treatment. However, home-based rehabilitation programs may provide various advantages over clinic-based programs. This article will explain the pathophysiology and benefits of exercise in those with the condition, as well as provide recommendations for home-based training for individuals with CHF.
