A tanulmány ismerteti Margaret Alice Murray boszorkánykultusz teóriáját, amit az 1920-as években adtak ki először. Murray (1863–1963) egy angol antropológus és egyiptológus volt. A dolgozat fő kérdése, hogy miképpen válhatott egy tudományosnak szánt mű az újpogányság egy ismert és kedvelt mítoszává. Mivel ez egy elterjedt nézet nemcsak a modern pogányságban, hanem a New Age egyéb irányzataiban, fontos feltárni a forrását. A boszorkánykultusz-teória szerint a középkori és újkori boszorkányperekben olvasható vádak mögött egy valós, pogány titkos kultusz állt, melynek követői a mágia segítségével segítették az embereket a mindennapokban, és emiatt az egyház üldözte őket.
