The first version of the map of the Hungarian vegetation-based landscape regions were prepared at the scale of 1 : 200,000 (1 km or higher resolution). The primary goal of the map was to provide an exact background for the presentation and evaluation of the data of the MÉTA database. Secondly, we intended to give an up-to-date and detailed vegetation-based division of Hungary with a comprehensive nomenclature of the regions. Regions were primar- 0236-6495/$ 20.00 © 2008 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest ily defined on the basis of their present zonal vegetation, or their dominant extrazonal or edaphic vegetation. Where this was not possible, abiotic factors that influence the potential vegetation, the flora were taken into consideration, thus, political and economical factors were ignored. All region borders were defined by local expert botanists, mainly based on their field knowledge. The map differs in many features from the currently used, country-wide, flora-or geography-based divisions in many features. We consider our map to be temporary (i.e. a work map), and we plan to refine and improve it after 5 years of testing.
Many woodpecker species rely on different forms of deadwood for nesting and foraging. However, the knowledge of the effect of enrichment of their habitat with different types on deadwood of this species group is lacking. Complex conservation-oriented management, including deadwood enrichment, was applied in a 20 ha even-aged oak-dominated woodland in Hungary. The foraging activities of woodpecker species were documented on selected treated trees over one, two and three years since these measures were implemented. The 109 individual oak trees examined represented five deadwood types: damaged-, girdled-, felled trees, and low-and tall stumps. We analysed the relationships between three variables (depth of foraging work, type of deadwood, and year) and foraging activity. Our results illustrated the prompt responses of woodpeckers to the treated trees. The woodpeckers used the five deadwood types in very different ways, and foraging activity was found to vary greatly in terms of depth of foraging and between years. More activity was carried out on both low-and tall stumps than on any other type one year after the treatment, whilst work on girdled trees and tall stumps predominated two and three years after the treatment. The utilisation of felled-and damaged trees by woodpeckers proceeded at a markedly slower pace than that of girdled trees and stumps, but the utilisation increased gradually. Most of the foraging activity was found to be on the outer bark, however, work on the inner bark and in the sapwood increased between the three years. The measures to conserve the woodpecker species should include the permanent creation and maintenance of various forms of deadwood to provide diverse and continuous foraging sites for woodpeckers.
A fás legelők olyan féltermészetes élőhelyek, amelyek hazánk potenciálisan erdővel borított területein a legeltetéses állattartás során, emberi hatásra alakultak ki. A hagyományos legeltetéses gazdálkodási módok visszaszorulása miatt ezek az élőhelyek eltűnőben vannak, ugyanis a szukcesszió következében a felhagyott területek beerdősülnek. A fás legelők hazánkban tájképi, tájtörténeti és természeti értékekkel bírnak, így kutatásuk kiemelt fontosságú. Munkánkat a hollókői vártól délre található fás legelőn végeztük. A területen 2013-ra természetvédelmi kezelést hajtottak végre, amely során mintegy 15 hektáron megtisztították a gyepet a cserjéktől és az újulattól. Célunk a rehabilitációs munkák növényzet összetételére, diverzitására gyakorolt hatásának vizsgálata, amelynek elérése érdekében a 2011.
