The incidence of ATAD was 2.53/100 000/year and remained constant throughout the study, contradicting recent perceptions of a rising incidence. ATAD, type A in particular, remains a highly lethal condition: Over half of all patients die within 30 days of the index event. A reduced 30-day mortality rate and an increased long-term survival rate indicate improved overall outcomes in patients with this complex condition.

The findings showed a significant increase of TSCI in 2005-2009, especially in sport/leisure accidents and incomplete cervical lesions due to falls among elderly. Prevention strategies need to focus on these risk groups and on seatbelt use.

The incidence of ARDS has almost doubled, but hospital mortality has decreased during the 23 years of observation. The 10-year survival of ARDS survivors is poor compared with the reference population.
