The 2020 COVID pandemic radically altered the way in which individuals live and work. For teachers, this entailed a shift in their teaching practice, with large numbers of schools around Australia and the world closing for prolonged periods of time and moving to an “online” format. This required teachers to quickly adapt their teaching practices adding further stress to an already stressful environment. In this article, we examine the relationships between teachers' stress, teachers' self‐efficacy, and teachers' well‐being during the COVID pandemic. The study presents the results from a quantitative survey undertaken in June and July 2020 with 534 teachers around Australia. While the study found that, overall, most teachers (77.29%) reported that they were not feeling anxious in their teaching role, teachers' responses indicated that they were experiencing high levels of stress and low levels of positive feelings such as joy, positivity, and contentment in their work during the COVID‐19 pandemic negatively impacting their well‐being and self‐efficacy.
This study addresses a gap in current literature by applying a qualitative phenomenological approach to understand how teachers with a calling orientation perceive meaning in their work. A calling orientation has been defined by Wrzesniewski, et al. (1997) as a commitment to one's work as it contributes to the greater good and makes the world a better place. Individuals' perception of participation in meaningful work has been closely linked to subjective wellbeing. The current study revealed that teachers' reported that they found meaning in their work through having an impact on their students' lives and through positive relationships with students and colleagues. However, there was an incongruence between activities that teachers find meaningful and the actual activities that they perform daily in their roles. Supporting teachers to find meaning in their work and to engage in meaningful work activities may serve to improve teacher wellbeing.
Higher education institutions have recently transitioned from face-to-face to online teaching and learning environments. However, academic staff lack sufficient training in applying emotional intelligence (EI) skills and strategies in online learning environments. Although literature addressing academics’ EI is sparse, some studies have suggested that lecturers’ EI greatly influences teaching and learning. This study used the concept of EI to understand students’ perceptions of how lecturers’ EI impacted their learning and engagement in an online learning environment. We conducted four online focus group interviews of 14 students pursuing a bachelor’s degree at two campuses of an Australian university, one in Melbourne and the other in Malaysia. Four main themes were identified using thematic analysis. Students discussed their perceptions and experiences on (a) vulnerabilities, coping and empathy; (b) relationships with lecturers, trust and safety; (c) communication, tone and voice; and (d) managing emotions of lecturers. Our findings suggest that lecturers’ EI impacted students’ learning and engagement in online learning spaces. However, the impact differs between Australia and Malaysia due to cultural differences. Drawing on the findings, we present online education good practices grounded in the theory of EI. Lecturers delivering online courses should consider employing these practices for effective teaching.
Implications for practice or policy:
Higher educational institutions need to support lecturers in developing the necessary EI skills to engage students in online learning.
Lecturers need to make meaningful attempts to develop positive relationships with students in online forums to support students’ engagement.
Lecturers working in online learning environments need to support students to develop friendships and connections with their peers.
Lecturers need to include regular discussion breaks during online lectures to allow students to share their opinions and experiences.
One-to-one learning refers to an instructional environment where all students have their own personal computer and relevant software available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This qualitative phenomenological study was conducted with 11 Year Six classroom teachers who were conducting one-to-one learning programs. Through this study's analysis made using the lens of self-determination theory, it was found that teachers could use the affordances of one-to-one learning classroom environments to support students' autonomy, competence and relatedness needs, enhancing student motivation. These findings may be applicable in other similar contexts. The findings of this study provide a unique contribution to knowledge around one-to-one learning and student motivation through the lens of selfdetermination theory. This study will enable educators to recognise the affordances of one-to-one learning environments in optimising student motivation.
