Exploration for hydrocarbons in remote areas often suffers from the lack of sufficient geological information. We propose a method which combines the structural mapping from satellite data, the calibration with outcrops and well data from outside the target area and petroleum system modeling. Satellite data provide information about the surface topography and lithology as well as the basin structure. A geological model is built which allows the extrapolation of legacy geological information from outcrops and well data from outside the target area. From these data, a geological model from surface to top basement is built. Maturation and migration processes are simulated. An estimate of the success ratio is obtained that aids decisions for further areal geophysical surveys.
