Thermal reaction between XeF2 and excess TiF4 resulted in the unexpected formation of a highly ionized Xe(II) species. The products [Xe2F3][Ti8F33] and [XeF]2[Ti9F38] represent the first examples of [Xe2F3](+) and [XeF](+) compounds, which differ from known Xe(II) salts containing discrete fluoride anions with pentavalent metalloid/metal centers. A new structural type of 2D polyanion [Ti8F33](-) and the formation and structure of the novel 1D [Ti9F38](2-) are discussed. Both products were characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis and Raman spectroscopy.
Calcium-metal batteries have received growing attention recently after several studies reporting successful metal plating and stripping with organic electrolytes. Given the low redox potential of metallic calcium, its surface is commonly covered by a passivation layer grown by the accumulation of electrolyte decomposition products. The presence of borate species in this layer has been shown to be a key parameter allowing for Ca 2 + migration and favoring Ca electrodeposition. Here, boron-based additives are evaluated in order to tune the SEI composition, morphology, and properties. The decomposition of a BF 3 -based additive is studied at different potentiostatic steps and the resulting SEI layer was thoroughly characterized. SEI growth mechanism is proposed based on both experimental data and DFT calculations pointing at the formation of boron-crosslinked polymeric matrices. Several boron-based adducts are explored as SEI-forming additives for calcium-metal batteries paving the way to very rich chemistry leading to Ca 2 + conducting SEI.
Lead-free piezoelectric 0.95(Na0.49K0.49Li0.02)(Nb0.8Ta0.2)O3–0.05CaZrO3 with 2 wt % MnO2 addition was prepared using mechanochemically-assisted solid-state synthesis. Upon mechanochemical activation of the mixture of reagents partial amorphization occurs which contributes to a significantly lower temperature of completion of the solid-state reaction, ~600 °C as opposed to ~700 °C for the conventional solid-state synthesis as determined by thermal analysis. The ceramic specimens prepared by the mechanochemically-assisted route exhibit improved compositional homogeneity and slightly enhanced piezoelectric properties, achieved in a considerably shorter processing time compared to the conventional solid-state synthesis route, which was studied as a reference.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
