The tendency of asphaltenes to aggregate and form clusters in solvents was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. This was done by evaluating the relative fluorescence quantum yield of asphaltenes diluted at several concentrations in toluene and by studying the changes in the fluorescence spectra of asphaltene solutions as the composition of the solvent, toluene and cyclohexane, is changed. The asphaltene fraction (heptane insoluble) was collected from a Brazilian heavy crude oil, and solutions of this material varying from 0.016 g/L up to 10 g/L were prepared in toluene. Front-face emission spectra were obtained in two wavelength ranges, from 310 to 710 nm, excited at 300 nm (short range), and from 410 to 710 nm, excited at 400 nm (long range). Severe quenching was observed at concentrations above about 0.1 g/L. Stern-Volmer plots (reciprocal of quantum yield against concentration) exhibited nonlinear, downward-curved behavior, indicating that a more complex suppression mechanism, probably influenced by the association of the asphaltene molecules, is taking place. The same asphaltenes were dissolved (0.1 g/L) in binary mixtures of toluene and cyclohexane, and emission spectra in both the short range and long range were obtained. Fluorescence was progressively quenched at longer wavelengths of the spectra as the proportion of cyclohexane in the solvent grew. Cyclohexane, a poor asphaltene solvent, is probably inducing static quenching through association of asphaltenes.

The densities of binary mixtures of n-hexadecane and cyclohexane at high pressures were measured in the range of (6.895 to 62.053) MPa at six different temperatures varying from (318.15 to 413.15) K and for eight compositions. The measurements were made by a high-pressure Anton Paar DMA 512 P densimeter integrated with the Ruska 2370 mercury Free PVT System. The densimeter was calibrated using analytical grade toluene, cyclohexane, and n-heptane as calibration fluids. The experimental error of density measurements is estimated as 0.5 kg·m-3. The measured densities at 348.15 K agree well with the available literature values at different pressures. The excess volumes, thermal expansion, and isothermal compressibility coefficients were obtained from measured densities. All data were correlated successfully with a modified Peng−Robinson equation of state.

-The particle size of asphaltene flocculates has been the subject of many recent studies because of its importance in the control of deposition in petroleum production and processing. We measured the size of asphaltene flocculates in toluene and toluene -n-heptane mixtures, using the light-scattering technique. The asphaltenes had been extracted from Brazilian oil from the Campos Basin, according to British Standards Method IP-143/82. The asphaltene concentration in solution ranged between 10 -6 g/ml and 10 -7 g/ml. Sizes was measured for a period of about 10000 minutes at a constant temperature of 20°C. We found that the average size of the particles remained constant with time and increase with an increase in amount of nheptane. The correlation obtained for size with concentration will be useful in asphaltene precipitation models.

Segundo a hipótese conhecida como "nova panspermia", o surgimento da vida na Terra teria sido viabilizada pelo abastecimento desses ácidos, entre outras substâncias orgânicas, sobre a nossa superfície, trazidas do espaço pelos cometas. 1,2 No decorrer do tempo, o ser humano notabilizou-se pela capacidade de manipulação e entendimento dos ácidos, que foi fundamental para a evolução da espécie e ainda essencial para a sua sobrevivência atual e futura. Por exemplo, o aquecimento global, resultado do efeito estufa provocado pela emissão de gases como o CO 2 e CH 4 , é uma das questões de sobrevivência que tem preocupado seriamente a humanidade. Uma das alternativas viáveis de atenuação deste efeito é por meio de eletrocatálise do CO 2 , de forma a convertê-lo em combustíveis recicláveis, como CH 3 OH, CH 3 -O-CH 3 , ou em ácido fórmico, formaldeído, etileno, propileno, etc. 3O desenvolvimento de novos catalisadores, especialmente os sólidos, desde a síntese até a operacionalização final, envolve uma série de procedimentos que necessitam de profundo conhecimento de mecanismos ácido-base. O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em investigar algumas das principais incompletudes atuais para a conceitualização da acidez na catálise no estado sólido, comparando-as com o meio líquido. entenDimentos moDeRnos De aciDez e BasiciDaDeAo final do século XIX, o químico Svante Arrhenius definiu ácidos e bases em termos de propriedades dissociativas de íons, porém ainda não fora esclarecido que substâncias eram formadas. A idéia da existência de íons não era nova, uma vez que Michael Faraday (1791-1867) já a tinha considerado em função de seus experimentos de eletrólise. No entanto, a proposta de Arrhenius era mais revolucionária, pois considerou que os íons poderiam ser formados na ausência de corrente elétrica e, além disso, seriam responsáveis por diversas reações químicas.Não obstante o seu sucesso, a teoria de Arrhenius não se aplicava de forma adequada a soluções que não fossem aquosas e tampouco previra que certas substâncias poderiam provocar a liberação de H + ou OH -sem conter estes íons em sua fórmula. A aplicação da teoria de Arrhenius também não abrangia os sólidos, mas pouco a pouco outra...
