Aim:In-vitro study was done to evaluate the incidence of MB2 canals using three different methods (CBCT, CLINICAL ANALYSIS AND DENTAL LOUPES) and to compare the efficacy of the three methods in identifying the incidence of MB2 canals in maxillary permanent first molars.Materials and Methods:The study sample consisted of 120 extracted intact permanent maxillary molars. These extracted teeth were subjected to CBCT. Later the teeth were access opened with naked eye to find the incidence of MB2 canal, and then the teeth were visualised under dental loupe to locate MB2 canal if they were missed under naked eye. Results was statistically analysed by Mc Nemar's tests with Bonferroni correction, Chi square test and Cochran's Q test.Result:CBCT showed high incidence (68.3%) of MB2 canal in maxillary first molars and it showed to be a reliable method in detecting MB2 canal. When compared to dental loupe (52.5%) and naked eye (25%), the dental loupe improved the detection of MB2 canal.Conclusion:Within the parameter of this study in detecting the incidence of MB2 canal, using CBCT dental loupes and naked eye, detection of MB2 canal was significantly higher with CBCT followed by dental loupe and least with naked eye.
Aim: To compare and evaluate the efficacy of ProTaper ® Universal retreatment system (URS) files in retrieval of gutta-percha (GP) from the canals obturated with two different obturation techniques, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: Fifty-two extracted maxillary central incisors fulfilling inclusion criteria were decoronated and prepared with ProTaper ® rotary files till F3 file size. Specimens were randomly divided into two groups and were obturated with GP. The first group was obturated with cold lateral condensation technique and second group was obturated with thermoplasticized GP technique. The root fillings were retrieved from the canals using ProTaper ® URS files. Preoperative and postoperative CBCT imaging was employed to assess the residual filling material in the canals. ITK-Snap software was used to calculate volume of filling material in the canals. Data were entered into Microsoft excel worksheet and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 18.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Descriptive statistics with percentage mean and standard deviation was computed. Independent sample t test was used to test the difference between study groups. Results: Residual root canal fillings were detected in all specimens. The mean volume percentage of remaining filling material was 10.69% ± 3.50 and 13.70% ± 3.63 in canals obturated with cold lateral condensation and thermoplasticized GP techniques, respectively.
Conclusion:This study concluded that though ProTaper ® URS failed to remove GP completely, it was more efficient in the group of root canals obturated with cold lateral condensation than the canals obturated with thermoplasticized GP technique.
Aim: To evaluate Preston's ratio and Recurrent Esthetic Dental (RED) proportion in smiles of female patients who are satisfied with their smiles. Methodology: 86 subjects who fulfilled inclusion criteria for the study were selected. A distance of 30 inches was maintained between camera and subject. With the help of cheek retractor, cheeks were retracted and pictures of subjects were taken with camera. Images were transferred to computer. Using Bit rule software, mesio-distal width of upper anteriors was measured. Data were recorded and transferred to excel sheet. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tests and conclusion was drawn. Arthematic mean and student t test were employed to evaluate the data. Level of significance was, p=0.05. Results: Out of 86 smiles, 20 smiles presented with RED ratio. 27 smiles demonstrated Preston's ratio in lateral incisor to central incisor proportions, whereas 20 smiles demonstrated Preston's ratio in canine to lateral incisor proportions. Conclusion: Preston's ratio was more prevalent among lateral incisors and central incisors of all the smiles included in this study. But on analysis of canine to lateral incisor proportions, theory of Recurrent Esthetic Dental ratio and Preston's ratio displayed same results.
