Σκοπός της διατριβής ήταν η μελέτη της «εικόνας» των Ελλήνων για τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής (ΗΠΑ) την περίοδο από τον Νεοελληνικό Διαφωτισμό μέχρι τον Α΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Πιο συγκεκριμένα διερευνήθηκε το συμβολικό περιεχόμενο αυτής της «εικόνας», η διαδικασία, οι φορείς και τα μέσα «κατασκευής» της, η λειτουργία, οι μεταλλάξεις και οι προσαρμογές της στις ανάγκες της ελληνικής ιστορικής συγκυρίας του 19ου και των αρχών του 20ου αιώνα καθώς και η επιρροή της στη διαμόρφωση πολιτικών και κοινωνικών συμπεριφορών και ταυτοτήτων. Η εικόνα της Αμερικής ακολούθησε ουσιαστικά την πορεία συγκρότησης του ελληνικού έθνους-κράτους, «εργαλειοποιήθηκε» στον ελληνικό δημόσιο Λόγο, προσαρμόστηκε στις ιδιαιτερότητες, τους προβληματισμούς, τα διλήμματα και προτάγματα της εκάστοτε ιστορικής περιόδου και συναρθρώθηκε με δύο κομβικής σημασίας ζητήματα για τον Ελληνισμό: Το πρώτο ήταν η πολιτειακή οργάνωση και εξέλιξη των πολιτικών θεσμών και το δεύτερο το ζήτημα συγκρότησης της ελληνικής εθνικής ταυτότητας και το δίλημμα τοποθέτησής της ανάμεσα στο δίπολο «Ανατολή»–«Δύση», συντήρηση–εκσυγχρονισμός. Η εργασία ακολουθεί χρονολογική – θεματική δομή, προκειμένου να γίνουν αντιληπτές όλες οι λεπτές εναλλαγές, οι αποχρώσεις και οι κατά καιρούς σημασιοδοτήσεις της εικόνας της Αμερικής στον ελληνικό δημόσιο Λόγο. Όσον αφορά τις πηγές, απλώνεται σε μια πληθώρα κειμένων, όπως ιστορικά έργα, πολιτικές πραγματείες, διπλωματική αλληλογραφία, οικονομικές μελέτες, φιλολογικές αναλύσεις, ιστορικά και γεωγραφικά εγχειρίδια, άρθρα του ημερήσιου και περιοδικού Τύπου, ταξιδιωτικές εντυπώσεις, ημερολόγια, λογοτεχνικά κείμενα κ.ά.
