Laminated glass beams and plates are widely used in glazing and photovoltaic applications. One feature of these structures is a relatively thin and compliant polymeric layer for embedding solar cells. Proper design of photovoltaic glass modules requires an analysis of transverse shear strain distribution in polymeric encapsulant. In this paper a three layered beam with glass skins and a polymeric core is applied as a model structure to evaluate the mechanical properties. Robust relationships between the maximum deflection, the transverse shear strain of the core layer and the applied force in a three-point-bending test of laminated glass beam samples are derived. The first order shear deformation beam theory and a layer-wise type beam theory are applied. An expression for the transverse shear stiffness of the laminated glass beam is presented. The results for the maximum deflection are compared with the results discussed in the literature. Furthermore, a three-dimension al finite element analysis is performed to verify the applied beam theories. Three-point-bending tests for laminated glass beams with core layers from different polymeric materials are performed. Phenomenological constitutive equations that describe inelastic behavior of advanced steels at elevated temperature are developed. To characterize hardening, recovery, and softening processes, a composite model with creep-hard and creep-soft constituents is applied. The volume fraction of the creep-hard constituent is assumed to decrease toward a saturation value. This approach reproduces well the primary creep as a result of stress redistribution between constituents and tertiary creep as a result of softening. To describe the whole tertiary creep stage, a damage variable in the sense of continuum damage mechanics is introduced. The material parameters and the response functions in the model are calibrated against experimental creep curves for X20CrMoV12-1 steel. For the verification, simulations of the inelastic response are performed and the results compared with experimental data including creep under stress change conditions and stressstrain response under constant strain rate. Furthermore, the lifetime predictions are analyzed and compared with the published creep rupture strength data. The results show that the consideration of both softening and damage processes is necessary to characterize the long-term strength in a wide stress range. Finally, the model is generalized to the multi-axial stress state.

Many materials exhibit the stress range dependent creep behavior. The power law creep observed for a certain stress range changes to the viscous type creep as the stress value decreases. Recently published experimental data for advanced heat resistant steels indicate that the high creep exponent (in the range 7-12) may decrease to the low value of approximately unity within the stress range relevant for engineering structures. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of the stress range dependent power-law-viscous creep transition on the behavior of structures at elevated temperature. A constitutive model for the minimum creep rate is introduced to describe both the linear and the power law creep depending upon the stress level. To demonstrate basic features of the stress range dependent creep modeling, several elementary examples from structural mechanics are presented. They include a stress relaxation problem, a beam subjected to pure bending and a pressurized thick-walled cylinder. Based on the uni-axial transition stress the transition value of the external load is estimated such that above this value the power law can be applied. For the loading levels below this value the character of the stress distribution as well as the stress values are essentially influenced by the viscous creep.
