Since its outbreak in December 2019 in Wuhan Province (China), the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease quickly spread around the world in such a way that most response plans were outdated. There was an urgent need to change and adapt response strategies as the virus globally spread. Entire firms and economies were brought to a standstill in order to reduce the virus' capacity to spread and to limit some of the short-term impacts in order to save time and find out solutions to come back to a more or less normal way of life. Thus, most of the countries that closed their air, sea and land borders had to reopen them progressively, with travel restrictions submitted to rigid controls. In Côte d'Ivoire, as in all other countries, air travellers leaving the territory were required to provide a certificate for a negative COVID-19 test, valid for 24 to 72 hours depending on the country of destination. Carapa procera (Meliaceae) est une plante très exploitée en médecine traditionnelle pour le traitement des pathologies infectieuses en Afrique occidentale. Le but de ce travail est d’évaluer l’activité antibactérienne de l’extrait hydroalcoolique des feuilles de cette plante sur la croissance in vitro de Staphylococcus aureus (204C12) et Shigella sp. (1177C10), deux germes multirésistants. Les paramètres antibactériens de Carapa procera ont été déterminés par les méthodes de diffusion en milieu solide et de dilution en milieu liquide respectivement pour les diamètres d’inhibition et les concentrations minimales inhibitrice et bactéricide (CMI et CMB). L’extrait de Carapa procera a montré une activité bactéricide effective avec des diamètres d’inhibition variant de 18 à 21 mm pour des CMB de 0,19 mg/ml et de 0,39 mg/ml respectivement contre Shigella sp. et Staphylococcus aureus. Le potentiel antibactérien de cet extrait pourrait être attribué aux alcaloïdes, aux tanins et aux flavonoïdes révélés par le screening phytochimique. Les résultats obtenus confirment l’utilisation traditionnelle de cette plante dans le traitement des différentes pathologies dans lesquelles les germes testés sont impliqués.
Kigelia africana dried bark has been recommended in the management of sickle cell anemia by traditional practitioners. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro antioxidant and sickling inhibitory activities of Kigelia africana. Quantitative estimation of phenolic compounds was performed using colorimetric method in hydro-ethanolic extract (70%) and decocted. The sickling inhibitory activity was determinate according to Emmel method and the evaluation of antioxidant properties was carried out using the method of scavenging the free radical DPPH. The obtained results indicated that Kigelia africana species contains flavonoids (8.61±1.08 mg QE and 9.78±1.14 mg QE/g of dry weight) and total phenols (9.48±0.19b mg GAE/g and 11.11±0.22 mg GAE /g of dry weight) in decocted and hydroethanolic extract respectively. The IC 50 values of the ethanolic extract and the decocted were 0.320±0.01 and 0.468±0.04 mg/mL respectively. The in vitro sickle-formation inhibition test indicated the value of 89% and 82.36% for the ethanolic extract and the decocted at 10mg/mL respectively. Those values were higher than 80% which was the phenylalanine value. Both extracts showed antioxidant and sickling inhibitory activities. Overall, there could have a correlation between these activities and phenolic compound content in this studied plant extracts. These results would justify the use of this plant in rural environment.
