O crescimento populacional mundial, aliado à urbanização e à industrialização, especialmente em regiões metropolitanas, tem fomentado um crescimento considerável nas atividades de construção, aumentando a disposição de resíduos no meio físico. Uma possível solução para a minimização do impacto causado pela disposição dos resíduos no meio ambiente é a sua incorporação em solos, a fim de promover melhorias nas propriedades destes e contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Apesar da existência de estudos abordando a eficácia do uso de resíduos industriais como agentes estabilizantes de solos para fins de engenharia de pavimentação, ainda não há um método fundamentado em planejamentos experimentais para a determinação de dosagens otimizadas desses materiais não convencionais em misturas com solos. Neste contexto, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a viabilidade técnica da utilização dos resíduos “escória de aciaria elétrica primária (EAEP)” e “cinza volante” como agentes estabilizadores de solos, visando sua aplicação em camadas estruturais de pavimentos. Foram utilizadas duas amostras de solo, uma argilosa e uma arenosa, provenientes da microrregião de Viçosa-MG. Um estudo para se determinar a melhor mistura solo-EAEP-cinza volante foi realizado através da metodologia de planejamento experimental em rede simplex-centróide, utilizando como variáveis de resposta as propriedades mecânicas representadas pela resistência à compressão simples (RCS), o índice CBR e o módulo de resiliência (MR). Observou-se que a melhor dosagem (mistura ótima) foi a que possuía a maior quantidade de EAEP estabelecida no planejamento experimental, resultando na mistura com 80% de solo, 20% de EAEP e 0% de cinza volante, para ambas as amostras de solo e para as três camadas estruturais consideradas, a saber, reforço de subleito, sub-base e base. O aumento na magnitude de todas as propriedades mecânicas analisadas foi atribuído às trocas catiônicas e principalmente à formação de compostos cimentícios. Por possuir alta porcentagem de cálcio em sua constituição, a EAEP em contato com o solo promove não apenas a formação de compostos cimentícios, mas também a carbonatação. Diante do estudo sobre a influência da carbonatação em solos estabilizados, verificou-se a ausência de um estudo que avalie a influência da carbonatação em misturas solo-EAEP, com a finalidade de utilizá-las em camadas estruturais de pavimentos asfálticos. O efeito da carbonatação nas misturas solo-EAEP foi avaliado considerando-se a durabilidade desse tipo de mistura. Observou-se que a formação de carbonato de cálcio melhorou o desempenho das misturas solo-EAEP, maximizando suas resistência e rigidez medidas através dos ensaios de RCS, índice mini-CBR e de MR. Adicionalmente, ainda não há na literatura técnica estudos que avaliaram os efeitos da carbonatação de misturas solo-EAEP no comportamento resiliente e de seu consequente impacto na avaliação estrutural de um pavimento asfáltico. Diante dessa lacuna, foi avaliado o impacto da carbonatação sobre as características resilientes da mistura solo-EAEP ótima através de análises estruturais realizadas por meio do software AEMC sobre um pavimento de anteprojeto cuja camada de subleito era constituída por essa mistura. Observou-se que o aumento nos valores de MR gerado pela formação de carbonato de cálcio promoveu uma diminuição das deflexões no topo do revestimento asfáltico, da deformação vertical no topo do subleito e da deformação horizontal de tração na fibra inferior dessa mesma camada, reduzindo, portanto, o efeito dos danos causados por afundamento plástico nas trilhas de roda e por trincamento por fadiga, aumentando a vida de serviço do pavimento. A aplicação da EAEP na estabilização de solos tropicais de baixa capacidade de suporte mostrou-se uma alternativa viável técnica e ambientalmente, pois proporcionou uma melhoria das propriedades mecânicas avaliadas, possibilitando seu emprego em obras de pavimentação, além de contribuir com o meio ambiente.
