Die vorliegende Untersuchung befasst sich mit dem späten Artusroman „Diu Crône“. Grundlage der Analyse sind die Struktur der Heldenreise nach Josef CAMPBELL und die räumliche Konzeption von HEINRICHs Werk. Beide Ansatzpunkte verknüpfend wird deutlich, dass der bizarre und befremdlich anmutende Weg, den Gawein absolviert, einen entscheidenden liminalen Lebensabschnitt für den Artusritter darstellt. Im Laufe der Reise muss der Protagonist sich Station für Station die vielschichtige Welt der Crône erschließen, Schwellen passieren, um in andere Reiche vorzudringen, und entsprechend seinem Verhalten vor Ort können die Strukturen der Räume modifiziert werden. Die Reise fordert gleichermaßen, dass Gawein sich von bestehenden, vertrauten Handlungsmuster löst und bereit ist, sein Handlungsrepertoire zu erweitern bzw. zu verändern, um damit sowohl der Anderswelt als auch dem höfischen Raum gerecht zu werden. Auf Grundlage der großen Varianz der geographischen Gegebenheiten in der Crône bereitet HEINRICH durch die Schilderung des Werdegangs von Gawein so letztlich die Krönung des Ritters vor, die gleichermaßen das arthurische Reich wie auch die Präsenz des arthurischen Mythos über die Lebzeiten des Königs hinaus sichern soll – und damit das Weiterleben des Artusromans.
