To examine the cell compatibility, BHK-21 Clone-13 cells were cultured on the surfaces of various polymeric materials such as poly (acrylate) s, poly (vinyl alcohol) derivatives, poly (amino acid) s, cellulose derivatives, and so forth. Sugar consumption coefficient was introduced in order to evaluate the compatibility quantitatively. After three days of cultivation which was enough to get confluent on the control surface, growth rate, sugar consumption, and protein content were measured and relative values against the control surface were estimated for doubling time, sugar consumption coefficient, and protein content per cell. Relative doubling rate and sugar consumption coefficient as well as growth pattern changed much depending on the properties of the polymers by virtue of the biological amplification of logarithmic proliferation.These dependences were suggested to be good indices of the effects of the polymeric materials on the cell functions. Abnormal cell growth and low growth rate were observed on the surfaces of poly (vinyl alcohol), poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), ethyl cellulose, and ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose.
