The academic affiliations of the authors of all regular " journal articles published in the Journal of Social Service Research, Social Work, Social Service Review, Journal of Social Work Education, Social Casework, and Child Welfare between 1984-1988 were reviewed and tabulated, producing a ranking of the colleges and universities whose faculty'are making the mos?:substantive conhibulions to the social work literature. The resulls are com~ared with the findings of a similar, previously published, study cove'ring Ule years 1979-1983, allowing an assessment of any changes in the relative rankings of these academic institutions.The quality of academic programs in various disciplines may be assessed through a variety of techniques.
