T raffic over the Internet uses packet switching technology, in which communication is broken down into small units of data called packets. The nodes in a network route the packets according to the destination address contained within each packet. Packet switching allows the same data path to be shared by many users in the network and is therefore better suited for the bursty nature of the multimedia data traffic that will dominate future networks.
