El desarrollo de materiales ablativos de bajo peso para la fabricación de sistemas de protección térmica y componentes de propulsión juega un papel importante en el desarrollo de la industria aeroespacial, especialmente en el campo de la cohetería, en donde el peso de cada componente está limitado por la capacidad de empuje del motor cohete (relación empuje/peso). La cámara de combustión y la tobera del motor cohete deben diseñarse para soportar elevadas temperaturas (≈2000°C) durante el vuelo, en un ambiente ablativo severo. Este articulo reporta resultados de investigación obtenidos en la Fuerza Aérea Colombiana (FAC), haciendo énfasis en la aplicación de estos materiales innovadores en la fabricación de motores cohete. Los resultados están asociados a la síntesis y caracterización del desempeño térmico de materiales compuestos ablativos basados en una matriz polimérica (tipo resina poliéster) reforzada con la incorporación de fibras cortas de vidrio y altos volúmenes de materiales particulados finamente molidos (cargas cerámicas); destacando que estas cargas corresponden a residuos o sub-productos industriales. Se destaca la posibilidad de reducir el peso del motor-cohete a partir de la aplicación de estos compuestos ablativos, con ventajas adicionales como el bajo costo y fácil adquisición de las materias primas; aspectos que se consideran importantes en aras de impulsar la construcción de cohetes sonda (experimentales) en Colombia. La investigación tiene correspondencia con el proyecto titulado “Diseño, construcción y lanzamiento de un cohete experimental (tipo sonda) con fines científicos, tecnológicos y militares, apto para el transporte de pequeñas cargas útiles (≤500 gramos)”, que se desarrolla en la Escuela Militar de Aviación “Marco Fidel Suarez” en el marco de la “Estrategia para el desarrollo aéreo y espacial de la Fuerza Aérea Colombiana 2042”.
