The induction of newly qualified teachers in the Republic of Ireland remains uneven and lacking in structure, despite calls for its reform by stakeholders in the education system. This article critically surveys existing provision for beginning teachers. It then evaluates current proposals for a national induction programme that will build on their preservice education and prepare them for the responsibilities of full-time teaching.
