Dentre as cadeias produtivas de maior destaque temos as criações de ruminantes (bovinos, ovinos e caprinos), a piscicultura (que tem aumentando consideravelmente), a avicultura, a suinocultura e a criação de animais não convencionais (como codornas e coelhos). Para que produtores possam continuar com este crescimento, há necessidade de aperfeiçoamento nas áreas da ciência, tecnologia e inovação. Pensando nisto a Editora Atena traz esta compilação de artigos sobre produção animal, como forma de aprofundar o entendimento sobre as cadeias da produção animal, separados de forma a facilitar a busca e a leitura, destacando as principais produções, produções não convencionais e a agricultura familiar.
As unidades de economia familiar que constituem a agricultura familiar, apresentam especificidades que as distingue dos produtores rurais, que seguem a lógica produtivistas, a produção de mercadorias.Por conseguinte, ao seguir a lógica produtivista, os grandes conglomerados agrícolas apropriam-se de terras apenas como mercadoria sob a justificativa de desenvolvimento territorial.No entanto, os estabelecimentos familiares são os que geram postos de trabalho no meio rural, enquanto os grandes estabelecimentos dependem de uma média de 67 hectares para geração de um posto de trabalho, já os estabelecimentos familiares demandam de apenas 8 hectares, uma diferença significativa. Para além, aponta IBGE (2017), 3.897.408 estabelecimentos (considerando os que atenderam os critérios da lei), ou seja, 77% ocupam 81 milhões de hectares, representando apenas 23% da área total dos estabelecimentos agropecuários do Brasil.Dessa forma, a agricultura familiar pode ser entendida como uma construção social, ou seja, existe uma relação com a terra está para além de enxergá-la apenas como meio de produção de mercadorias, mas sim, de produção de vida. Corrobora Schneider ( 2004), ao afirmar que cada lugar tem a sua história, que necessita contar com a economia solidária, com a cooperação entre os seus protagonistas.Não obstante, a agricultura familiar, pelo seu histórico de exclusão, necessita contar com as políticas públicas, que de certa forma, por um longo período da história, não eram contempladas. Para Santos (2001), a agricultura familiar só se viabiliza a partir de uma economia solidária, pelo uso de novas tecnologias, bem como, com a diversificação dos meios tradicionais de produção. Assim, as formas coletivas de produção e comercialização se apresentam como alternativas concretas mediante a prática de cooperação, de associativa, com o apoio das políticas pública.Tem-se presente que as políticas públicas não são apenas de responsabilidade dos governos, mas também necessitam da presença de organizações associativistas e cooperativista, do movimento sindical. Desta forma, a organização e a formulação das estratégias em benefício da agricultura familiar podem ser protagonizadas pelos atores locais, instituições privadas e políticas, organizações não governamentais e o próprio poder público com o intuito de desenvolver o local (BUARQUE, 1999).Tem-se presente que a competição desenfreada, o aquecimento do mercado de terras, desafiam a unidade de produção agrícola familiar, para atender as determinantes do mercado, que é um problema a ser superado. Para o agricultor familiar, a decisão de permanecer na atividade tem Michael Woods (2007), aponta que nas pequenas cidades surge uma ruralidade, caracterizada pelo surgimento das redes internacionais de bens agroindustriais.
