Introdução: A osteoartrose é uma doença articular degenerativa muito comum na população idosa e está associada à rigidez articular, dor, limitações, deformidades progressivas e perda de função. Objetivo: encontrar na literatura evidências científicas sobre eficácia dos tratamentos fisioterapêuticos: hidroterapia e cinesioterapia para osteoartrose de quadril e joelho. Revisão de literatura. Método: A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados Pubmed, Medline, Lilacs, SciELO e PEDro. Foram utilizadas as palavras-chave Hidroterapia (Hydrotherapy), Cinesioterapia (Kinesiotherapy), Exercícios (Exercises), Osteoatrose (Osteoarthritis), Osteoartrite (Osteoarthritis), Tratamento fisioterapêutico (Physical Therapy) ligados aos termos AND ou OR, em língua portuguesa e inglesa. Para verificar a qualidade dos estudos selecionados, foram lidos os resumos para ver quais se encaixavam dentro do tema proposto. Resultados: Foi encontrado um total de 150 estudos a partir da busca eletrônica, destes apenas 19 satisfizeram os critérios de inclusão e foram analisados integralmente. A análise da qualidade metodológica dos 19 estudos incluídos possibilitou classificar 18 deles como de alta qualidade metodológica. Com relação à intervenção, métodos e delineamentos contidos nos estudos, houve uma variação ampla, porém com resultados eficazes, sendo que na maioria dos artigos observou-se melhora no quadro apresentado pelos pacientes com AO. Conclusão: O ganho de força muscular apresentado com o exercício físico em solo foi superior comparado aos na água. Já o tratamento hidroterapêutico, necessita de mais estudos que norteiem parâmetros como: intensidade, duração, para que o tratamento seja mais fidedigno.
