Kerstin Fest untersucht am Beispiel von Debatten über Theaterarchitektur im frühen 19. Jahrhundert in England den Zusammenhang ästhetischer und pragmatischer Fragestellungen. Die Ästhetik des Raumes ist dabei stets mit Aspekten der Sicherheit verknüpft. Fest zeigt anhand dreier Fallbeispiele, dass Architekturkritiker nicht nur das tatsächliche materielle Risiko von öffentlichen Theaterräumen (Theaterbrände waren keine Seltenheit) problematisieren, sondern dies auch mit der Idee des Dramas als (metaphorisch) riskanter Kunstform verschränken: Letztlich verleihen die Diskurse über Theaterbauten und ihre Risiken auch der Angst vor Veränderung Ausdruck und stellen sich der Frage, was eigentlich ein kulturelles Risiko ausmacht.
