Plant respiration results in an annual flux of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere that is six times as large as that due to the emissions from fossil fuel burning, so changes in either will impact future climate. As plant respiration responds positively to temperature, a warming world may result in additional respiratory CO2 release, and hence further atmospheric warming. Plant respiration can acclimate to altered temperatures, however, weakening the positive feedback of plant respiration to rising global air temperature, but a lack of evidence on long-term (weeks to years) acclimation to climate warming in field settings currently hinders realistic predictions of respiratory release of CO2 under future climatic conditions. Here we demonstrate strong acclimation of leaf respiration to both experimental warming and seasonal temperature variation for juveniles of ten North American tree species growing for several years in forest conditions. Plants grown and measured at 3.4 °C above ambient temperature increased leaf respiration by an average of 5% compared to plants grown and measured at ambient temperature; without acclimation, these increases would have been 23%. Thus, acclimation eliminated 80% of the expected increase in leaf respiration of non-acclimated plants. Acclimation of leaf respiration per degree temperature change was similar for experimental warming and seasonal temperature variation. Moreover, the observed increase in leaf respiration per degree increase in temperature was less than half as large as the average reported for previous studies, which were conducted largely over shorter time scales in laboratory settings. If such dampening effects of leaf thermal acclimation occur generally, the increase in respiration rates of terrestrial plants in response to climate warming may be less than predicted, and thus may not raise atmospheric CO2 concentrations as much as anticipated.

[1] Deforestation and climate change have the capacity to alter rainfall regimes, water availability, and surface-atmosphere flux of water and energy of tropical forests, especially in ecotonal, semi-deciduous tropical forests of the southern Amazon Basin, which have experienced rapid regional warming and deforestation over the last three decades. To reduce uncertainty regarding current and future energy and water flux, micrometeorological measurements of latent (Q e ) and sensible heat flux (Q h ) and canopy conductance (G c ) were combined with measurements of sap flux density (F d ) and maximum leaf conductance (g smax ) to characterize the seasonal controls on mass (H 2 O) and energy exchange of an ecotonal, semi-deciduous forest in northern Mato Grosso, Brazil over the 2005-2006 annual cycle. Average diel patterns and daily rates of energy flux and conductance declined during the dry season; however, the decline in F d and Q e was smaller and/or more gradual than G c and g smax . Weekly averages of transpiration calculated from sap flow measurements during the dry-wet season transition period were positively correlated (r 2 = 0.47; p < 0.05; n = 11) with estimates of leaf area index (LAI) derived from the Modis-Aqua satellite platform while estimates of evapotranspiration ET derived from eddy covariance were not, presumably because these estimates also include an evaporation component. Overall, our results suggest that access to deep water reserves can support high rates of F d and Q e during the dry season, but because of high evaporative demand, declines in plant water potential lead to a corresponding decline in G c . Furthermore, seasonal variations in LAI, that are likely to be controlled in part by plant water status and phenology, constrain tree and stand transpiration. Thus the consistency of Q e over the annual cycle appears to be the result of trade-offs between water availability (rainfall, soil moisture, water potential), canopy structural properties (LAI), and meteorological conditions including vapor pressure deficit and net radiation.

Rising temperatures caused by climate change could negatively alter plant ecosystems if temperatures exceed optimal temperatures for carbon gain. Such changes may threaten temperature‐sensitive species, causing local extinctions and range migrations. This study examined the optimal temperature of net photosynthesis (Topt) of two boreal and four temperate deciduous tree species grown in the field in northern Minnesota, United States under two contrasting temperature regimes. We hypothesized that Topt would be higher in temperate than co‐occurring boreal species, with temperate species exhibiting greater plasticity in Topt, resulting in better acclimation to elevated temperatures. The chamberless experiment, located at two sites in both open and understory conditions, continuously warmed plants and soils during three growing seasons. Results show a modest, but significant shift in Topt of 1.1 ± 0.21 °C on average for plants subjected to a mean 2.9 ± 0.01 °C warming during midday hours in summer, and shifts with warming were unrelated to species native ranges. The 1.1 °C shift in Topt with 2.9 °C warming might be interpreted as suggesting limited capacity to shift temperature response functions to better match changes in temperature. However, Topt of warmed plants was as well‐matched with prior midday temperatures as Topt of plants in the ambient treatment, and Topt in both treatments was at a level where realized photosynthesis was within 90–95% of maximum. These results suggest that seedlings of all species were close to optimizing photosynthetic temperature responses, and equally so in both temperature treatments. Our study suggests that temperate and boreal species have considerable capacity to match their photosynthetic temperature response functions to prevailing growing season temperatures that occur today and to those that will likely occur in the coming decades under climate change.

Summary• Plant light interception efficiency is a crucial determinant of carbon uptake by individual plants and by vegetation. Our aim was to identify whole-plant variables that summarize complex crown architecture, which can be used to predict light interception efficiency.• We gathered the largest database of digitized plants to date (1831 plants of 124 species), and estimated a measure of light interception efficiency with a detailed three-dimensional model. Light interception efficiency was defined as the ratio of the hemispherically averaged displayed to total leaf area. A simple model was developed that uses only two variables, crown density (the ratio of leaf area to total crown surface area) and leaf dispersion (a measure of the degree of aggregation of leaves).• The model explained 85% of variation in the observed light interception efficiency across the digitized plants. Both whole-plant variables varied across species, with differences in leaf dispersion related to leaf size. Within species, light interception efficiency decreased with total leaf number. This was a result of changes in leaf dispersion, while crown density remained constant.• These results provide the basis for a more general understanding of the role of plant architecture in determining the efficiency of light harvesting.

We introduce the AusTraits database - a compilation of measurements of plant traits for taxa in the Australian flora (hereafter AusTraits). AusTraits synthesises data on 375 traits across 29230 taxa from field campaigns, published literature, taxonomic monographs, and individual taxa descriptions. Traits vary in scope from physiological measures of performance (e.g. photosynthetic gas exchange, water-use efficiency) to morphological parameters (e.g. leaf area, seed mass, plant height) which link to aspects of ecological variation. AusTraits contains curated and harmonised individual-, species- and genus-level observations coupled to, where available, contextual information on site properties. This data descriptor provides information on version 2.1.0 of AusTraits which contains data for 937243 trait-by-taxa combinations. We envision AusTraits as an ongoing collaborative initiative for easily archiving and sharing trait data to increase our collective understanding of the Australian flora.

Rates of tissue-level function have been hypothesized to decline as trees grow older and larger, but relevant evidence to assess such changes remains limited, especially across a wide range of sizes from saplings to large trees. We measured functional traits of leaves and twigs of three cold-temperate deciduous tree species in Minnesota, USA, to assess how these vary with tree height. Individuals ranging from 0.13 to 20 m in height were sampled in both relatively open and closed canopy environments to minimize light differences as a potential driver of size-related differences in leaf and twig properties. We hypothesized that (H1) gas-exchange rates, tissue N concentration and leaf mass per unit area (LMA) would vary with tree size in a pattern reflecting declining function in taller trees, yet maintaining (H2) bivariate trait relations, common among species as characterized by the leaf economics spectrum. Taking these two ideas together yielded a third, integrated hypothesis that (H3) nitrogen (N) content and gas-exchange rates should decrease monotonically with tree size and LMA should increase. We observed increasing LMA and decreasing leaf and twig Rd with increasing size, which matched predictions from H1 and H3. However, opposite to our predictions, leaf and twig N generally increased with size, and thus had inverse relations with respiration, rather than the predicted positive relations. Two exceptions were area-based leaf N of Prunus serotina Ehrh. in gaps and mass-based leaf N of Quercus ellipsoidalis E. J. Hill in gaps, both of which showed qualitatively hump-shaped patterns. Finally, we observed hump-shaped relationships between photosynthetic capacity and tree height, not mirroring any of the other traits, except in the two cases highlighted above. Bivariate trait relations were weak intra-specifically, but were generally significant and positive for area-based traits using the pooled dataset. Results suggest that different traits vary with tree size in different ways that are not consistent with a universal shift towards a lower 'return on investment' strategy. Instead, species traits vary with size in patterns that likely reflect complex variation in water, light, nitrogen and carbon availability, storage and use.
