Tin ion-exchanged montmorillonite (SnMont) was found to be a powerful catalyst for the cyanosilylation of aromatic and aliphatic ketones having a carbonyl group in sterically congested circumstances with cyanotrimethylsilane, giving the corresponding cyanohydrin trimethylsilyl ethers in excellent yields.
