Author Abstract: Based on the results of a research titled "Survey of databases of chemical substances and materials" (2000), current status and future directions of those databases are presented. The survey consists of 1)current status of chemical & material databases and comparison with other scientific fields, 2)interviews with researchers, and 3)suggestions on schemes of databases and frameworks for development. In this article, we discuss characteristics of chemical & material databases, user's needs, situation in other scientific fields (life science and earth science), desirable scheme of databases, and co-operation of research institutes and database producers.
