In an attempt to obtain solidified ionic liquids a cholesterol-based gelator has been applied to gelation of these liquids. By addition of a small amount of low molecular-weight gelator 1, ionic liquids such as N,N′-dialkyl-substituted imidazolium ions and N-alkyl pyridinium ions are easily gelated to give the sufficiently thermostable physical gels.
[structure: see text] Porphyrin tetramer 1 was newly designed and synthesized to construct a novel cooperative [60]fullerene (C(60)) binding system. Compound 1 has a p-terphenyl axis, which is expected to act as a scaffold for a guest-binding information transducer. In toluene, 1 can bind 2 equiv of C(60) to produce a 1:2 1/C(60) complex with association constants of 5800 M(-1) (K(1)) and 2000 M(-1) (K(2)). These values are significantly greater than those for control porphyrin dimers such as 2 and 3.

A novel heterocapsular molecule has been obtained in a self-assembled manner by a multi-point interaction between pyridine-appended homooxacalix[3]arene and a Zn(II) porphyrin trimer. The cavity delineated by π-basic components can accept [60]fullerene with K = 60 dm3 mol−1 at −30 °C.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations –citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
