N APPRECIATION of the personalities of children is in-A dispensable in dealing with behavior problems. This general statement holds in dealing with the behavior problems of the post-encephalitic. Rapport with an individual child must be established in order to observe the inner workings of a personality. Telling stories, reporting dreams, and making drawings have been most helpful in obtaining this understanding. This report deals only with drawings. The technique is as follows.The physician and child sit down a t a table, isolated from other chiIdren and people, and the child is told that he and the physician are to play a sort of game and that it will be fun. A number of ink blotches on a standard card are presented to the child who is asked to guess what they look like. Some of these blotches obviously look like animals. The physician tells what he sees if the child makes too great a delay in giving an answer. This emphasizes the co-operative nature of the procedure. Then on another sheet of paper a series of "blottoes" is presented and a similar procedure is followed. The responses are recorded. After they are all noted down the child is asked what preferences he has with regard to the things mentioned, whether he likes such and such an object, and why. All this introduces a great deal of spontaneity into the process and prepares the child in a very satisfactory way for what follows.The child is then given a piece of typewriting paper and asked to draw a picture of home, the house in which he lives. Crayons or pencils are available for choice. Comments are recorded usually alongside the drawing in a sketchy manner. The whole thing is made as dramatic as possibIe. Comments are recorded enthusiastically so that they seem to the child to be part of the drawing. Strange to say comments recorded in this way with a gusto do not inhibit, but rather stimulate, responses.
