O Diabetes mellitus (DM) representa um dos principais problemas de saúde pública da atualidade. O impacto epidemiológico que produz é expresso nas crescentes taxas de morbimortalidade e nas consequentes sequelas. Diante dessa realidade e no intuito de responder às exigências do mercado de trabalho, foi criado o Programa de Educação pelo Trabalho para a Saúde-PET-Saúde. Este trabalho teve como objetivo delinear a frequência de participação, bem como o perfil dos integrantes do PET-Saúde da Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM) que participaram de uma Capacitação sobre DM, além de analisar o número de amputações realizadas no município de Diamantina, MG, no ano de 2012. O grupo PET-Saúde/UFVJM é composto por 36 integrantes, sendo que 32 aceitaram participar desta pesquisa. A frequência média de participação nos módulos ofertados foi de 67,2% (dp ±17,4). Os participantes, em sua maioria (87,0%), eram do sexo feminino e com idade variando de 20 a 59 anos, sendo que a maior parcela (79.0%) concentrou-se na faixa etária de 20 a 29 anos. As amputações de membros inferiores decorrentes do DM, realizadas no município de Diamantina, MG, no ano de 2012, ocorreram principalmente naqueles diabéticos que apresentavam também hipertensão arterial. A utilização de práticas educativas como estratégia no tratamento do DM, melhora o conhecimento do profissional sobre o DM, melhorando a qualidade de vida dos usuários, aumentando a sua autonomia perante a doença e podendo evitar o cenário de complicações crônicas.
