The aim of the present study was to investigate the eŠect of experience or inexperience with weight-training under appropriate supervision on the knowledge of squatting exercises among university students. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among university students who exercise regularly (30 or more min per day, 2 or more days per week, and maintaining this for more than 1 year) to clarify the relationships between their experience of weight-training under appropriate supervision, knowledge of squatting exercises, and the frequency with which they perform squatting exercises (n=309). More than half of the students who exercised regularly had never experienced weight-training under appropriate supervision. Approximately 50z of the participants performed squats periodically, even if they did not have any experience with weight-training under appropriate supervision. The participants who lacked experience with weight-training under supervision had made signiˆcantly fewer attempts to consciously train their gluteal and knee ‰exor muscles during squatting exercises than those who had experienced weight-training under supervision. In fact, approximately 50z of the former did not consciously train their gluteal muscles during squatting exercises at all. These results suggest that although the students performed squatting exercises periodically, those who had never experienced weight-training under supervision may not have properly understood the squatting method. Therefore, to enhance the beneˆts of training, people should be shown the correct method to perform training exercises and given appropriate supervision.
The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the concepts of critical velocity (CV) and anaerobic swimming capacity (ASC) could be used by coaches as a reliable index in order to monitor 1500-m Surface (SF) performances in Finswimming. Thirteen Finswimmers (6 males and 7 females, 24+/-6 years), members of the Japanese national team, were instructed to swim three different swimming distances (400-, 800-, and 1500-m) at maximal effort in a 50m long course swimming pool. CV and the ASC were calculated using 400-m and 800-m swim times. Mean height and body mass were 170.2 cm and 69.7 kg in male and 160.5 and 61.0 kg in female. A highly positive correlation was found between the CV and the mean velocity of 1500-m SF (V1500) (r=0.91, P<0.01), but no correlation was found between the ASC and V1500. (r=0.46, P=0.11). However, a high correlation was found between the ASC and the residual error of V1500, calculated from the relationship between V1500 and the CV (r=0.89, P<0.01). These results suggest that the CV is a useful method for evaluating 1500-m SF performance and an aerobic performance expressed as the CV contributes to 1500-m SF performance.
Purpose: Finswimming is a speed competition sport practiced on the surface or underwater, by using monofins or two fins. In surface events (SF), competitors should surface within 15 m after the start and any turns. The aim of this study was to investigate the gender differences in the aerobic contribution to SF performances in finswimming, using the critical velocity (CV) concept in the analysis. Methods:The participants were sixteen monofin swimmers (eight males and eight females; 24±6 years). During a two-day period, participants performed maximal effort swimming at five test distances (100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m), and mean swimming velocity (V) of each distance was calculated . CV was calculated as the slope of the regression line between time and distance in the 400 and 800 m SF tests. Results:Although CV was significantly correlated with V800 m and V1500 m for males, it was significantly correlated with V200 m, V400 m, V800 m and V1500 m for females. Conclusion:The present results suggest that although the aerobic performance might contribute to SF performance for events from medium distance (i.e. 200m) to long distance (i.e. 1500m) in female participants, it might contribute to the long distance SF performances in male participants.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the consciousness among young people (n = 494) of training body part(s) by showing participants a picture of an exercise, through a questionnaire-based survey. Participants were shown a picture of a Back Squat, and were asked which body part(s) they felt was being trained in the picture. Participants who had no experience of doing squatting exercises (NO-SQUAT group, n = 102) and participants who were experienced in terms of doing squatting exercises and weight training under appropriate supervision (INSTRUCTED group, n = 146) were selected for the analysis. On seeing the picture, more than half of the NO-SQUAT group felt that the Back Squat was to train not only their lower body but also another body part(s); among these participants, approximately 70% felt that a Back Squat was appropriate to train their upper torso and arms too. Further, the NO-SQUAT group had made significantly fewer attempts to consciously train their gluteal and knee flexor muscles, and had made significantly more attempts to consciously train their upper torso and arms during the squatting exercises than the INSTRUCTED group had. These results suggest that to do exercises by referring to only a picture may result in the participants not properly understanding how the body part(s) should be trained during exercise. Therefore, to enhance the benefits of training, individuals need to be instructed, under appropriate supervision, on correct technique as well as knowledge about the exercise.
