Salmonids are descended from a common ancestor that underwent an autotetraploidization event. After a whole genome duplication species could deal with sex determination by deleting one copy of SEX, the sex determining locus, or by recruiting a duplicated transcription factor to become a novel sex determining gene. It is not known which if any of these strategies salmonids adopted, but it appears that they all have primarily a genetic mechanism of sex determination with male heterogamety. The sharing of sex-linked markers on the X and Y chromosomes and the difficulty in identifying Y-specific markers indicate that X and Y chromosomes in salmonids have a large pseudoautosomal region and a small sex determining region. Linkage analyses suggest that either SEX differs in different lineages or else has remained the same and moved by transposition to different chromosomes. The identification of the sex chromosomes in salmonid species has not resolved this issue. It is clear that salmonids are at an early stage in sex chromosome differentiation and therefore provide a wonderful opportunity to study the evolution of sex determination. The availability of a reference salmonid genome sequence would provide an important resource for research in this area.

The edible jelly®sh exumbrella collagen was prepared by limited pepsin digestion. The yield of collagen was very high; 46.4% on the basis of lyophilised dry weight. This collagen was comprised of a1a2a3-heterotrimers, moreover it was relatively stable at 26.0°C for 60 min. Thus, the edible jelly®sh exumbrella will have potential as an important collagen source for use in various industries and it is expected that the development thus so far unutilised resource will advance in the future.

Abstract. A hot‐water extract of Undaria pinnatifida was found to contain polysaccharide(s) which showed immunostimulating activity in fish. In order to identify the effective component(s), the hot‐water extract was fractionated and acid‐soluble (Fraction I) and acid‐insoluble (Fraction II) polysaccharides were evaluated for their potential to enhance protection against Edwardsiella tarda infection in common carp. Intraperitoneal injection of Fraction II in carp 6 and 3 days prior to challenge with E. tarda resulted in a significantly greater survival rate than that of control fish at doses of 10–30mgkg‐1. On the other hand, Fraction I was not effective at any dose. Chemical and physicochemical analyses revealed that Fraction II was sodium alginate with a high degree of purity, with a molecular weight of 45000 and an M/G ratio of 0.8. Some commercial alginates were similarly evaluated for their efficacy. Alginates from Macrocystis pyrifera (MW, 146000‐264000; M/G ratio, 0.9–1.0) significantly increased survival rate, but alginates from Lessonia nigrescens (MW, 177000–290000; M/G ratio, 1.3) had little effect. There are indications that the efficacy (protective effect) of alginates has some relationship to their M/G ratios.
