Musils Drama »Die Schwärmer« ist in der Forschung bisher vergleichsweise stiefmütterlich behandelt worden. Diese Tatsache ist erstaunlich, da Musil es selbst als sein »Hauptwerk« bezeichnet hat. Für das Drama wurde ihm außerdem auf Vorschlag von Alfred Döblin der Kleist-Preis zuerkannt 1 und anspruchsvolle Literaturkritiker besprachen es lobend nach seiner Erstaufführung im Berliner »Theater der Stadt«. 2 Freilich düpiert das Drama zunächst die Erwartung an die gattungstypische Handlungsorientierung. Statt dessen finden sich ausgedehnte philosophische Diskussionen über die Bedingungen von Erkenntnis, über Partnerschaften und über Fragen der Lebensführung. Bianca Cetti Marinoni hat gezeigt, wie wichtig die gedanklich-konzeptionelle Arbeit auch für die Entstehung des Stückes war und es deshalb als »essayistisch« bezeichnet. 3 Erschwerend kommt hinzu, daß die Verhandlungen zwischen den Figuren in einer äußerst dichten Sprache gestaltet sind, in die zahlreiche Metaphern und Vergleiche eingeflochten sind.
