The construct of and the paths to empowerment have received increasing attention in the psychological literature. Usually the concern is focused on the empowerment of clients. This article uses the concept as a vehicle to discuss issues facing women in school psychology. Literature from psychology of women and social psychology concerning the influence of gender on the assumption of leadership in small groups is reviewed. Behaviors associated with leadership are presented as critical for effective role functioning in school psychology. Research suggesting that women may behave in ways that reduce the probability of their being perceived as powerful is presented. Finally, implications from this research for training women as psychologists are elaborated.
