This paper compares biographical and self concept data collected by questionnaire from a sample of 1497 male and 805 female managers. The biographical data related to age, educational qualifications, and marital and family status. The seIf concept data represented respondents descriptions of themselves in general and at work using 15 semantic differential scales. The initial analysis of the results revealed significant age Merences between the male and female subsampla, which were controlled for, where possible, in the subsequent analyses. Important differences in the marital and family status of the men and women were revealed, which suggested that women had to face a difficult choice between marriage and family, on one hand, and a career, on the other. There were also differences in the educational and professional qualifications held by the men and women, and in their self concepts. both in general and at work. However, the analysis of this self concept data was thought to challenge many of the existing stereotypes held of women being unsuitable for managerial careers, although it also pointed up the various sources of stress that they experienced in pursuing those careers.
